Quick answer
Practise Level 1 food hygiene by explaining everyday hygiene choices and recognising when to report a problem or ask a responsible person. Use short original scenarios, then check the relevant lesson and workplace instruction. Practice questions support understanding; they do not reveal the live assessment or guarantee a pass.
Revise the actual learning outline
The NFS Level 1 outline covers awareness topics such as personal hygiene, contamination, cleaning and storage. Work through the lessons before testing recall. Make a small list of terms you cannot explain in your own words.
Check the provider’s current assessment instructions, completion conditions, available support and retake arrangements. Formats and pass rules belong to the actual provider. The examples below are original learning prompts, not questions taken from an assessment bank.
Try four awareness scenarios
| Prompt | Reasoned answer |
|---|---|
| You touch a phone before handling food. What needs attention? | Follow the workplace handwashing procedure before food handling; a visibly clean hand is not proof of cleanliness. |
| A delivery container is damaged. What should a support worker do? | Keep affected items from routine use and report the damage through the receiving procedure. |
| A customer asks whether a dish contains an allergen and you are unsure. | Use the designated information and responsible person; do not guess from the dish name. |
| Someone leaves a cleaning-product bottle beside open food. | Report and correct the unsafe situation through the approved procedure, considering whether food has been contaminated. |
For each answer, explain the possible harm, your own role and who can make the next decision. Avoid inventing a repair or product-safety judgement beyond your training.
Use mistakes to plan the next lesson
If you recognised a hazard but could not explain the action, revisit that topic and practise a different example. If you guessed an allergen answer, revise the information and escalation process rather than memorising a food list.
GOV.UK training guidance recognises several ways of developing appropriate skills, including workplace instruction and self-study. Ask a supervisor to demonstrate how the rule works in your setting.
Check practical understanding as well as recall
Try a teach-back: explain handwashing triggers, show where the current cleaning instructions are kept and identify the person who handles an uncertain food-safety question. Do this in a suitable supervised setting; practice must not expose customers to a learner’s unresolved mistake.
Use the existing four Cs guide for a practical revision structure. Assessment success and safe independent working are related but different checks.
Next steps
