About National Food Safety
QWhat is National Food Safety (NFS)?
National Food Safety (NFS) is an independent provider of online food safety training, learning resources and workplace products. Our website brings together food hygiene courses, free learning materials and practical products for people who handle food or manage workplace safety. You can explore the learning before deciding whether to purchase the assessment and certification option for a course. To find a suitable starting point, browse our course catalogue at Browse courses and compare the subjects, levels and course descriptions with your responsibilities.
QWhat is National Food Safety’s mission?
Our mission is to make food safety knowledge easier to access, understand and use at work. We aim to explain what a hazard is, why it matters and which precautions can reduce the risk. This means connecting learning with everyday tasks such as handwashing, safe food storage, cleaning and managing allergen information. Free lessons also give people a way to begin learning before deciding whether they need paid assessment and certification. Read more about our approach at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/pages/mission-and-values.
QWho can use your food safety training and resources?
Our training and resources support people starting a food-handling role, existing staff refreshing their knowledge, supervisors, managers and employers arranging staff training. Choose a course according to the work you do and the responsibilities you hold. Being new to a job does not automatically mean the lowest course level is the right choice. If an employer has requested training, check the exact subject, level and certificate requirements before buying. Compare the course descriptions at Browse courses, including the intended audience and any entry requirements.
QWhich businesses and workplaces is your training suitable for?
Our food safety learning supports tasks carried out in settings such as restaurants, cafés, takeaways, catering businesses, food shops, manufacturing premises, care homes and education settings. The right training depends on what each person does, including preparing food, managing allergen information, supervising staff or overseeing food safety procedures. Check the course description against those duties. If you are arranging training for a team and need help choosing, contact us at Contact support with your business type, staff roles, number of learners and any training requirements you have been given.
QWhat online food hygiene and workplace safety courses do you offer?
Our course subjects include food hygiene and safety, food allergy awareness and management, HACCP, workplace health and safety, and COSHH. Food hygiene learning covers everyday food-handling practices, while allergen training focuses on understanding and managing allergen risks. HACCP means Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points and concerns identifying food safety hazards and organising appropriate controls. COSHH means Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and covers risks from hazardous substances, including workplace cleaning chemicals. We offer different course levels and refresher learning. Browse the current courses at Browse courses and check the content and intended audience before choosing.
QIs National Food Safety a government body or food safety regulator?
No. National Food Safety is an independent training and resource provider. We are not a government department or food safety enforcement authority, and completing an NFS course does not itself give a business an official food hygiene rating. For an enquiry about an official inspection, a business’s hygiene rating or a local food safety enforcement matter, contact the relevant local authority. You can find your council’s website by entering a postcode at https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council. For help with an NFS course, purchase or certificate, use our own Contact Us page.
QHow do I start learning and work towards a food safety certificate?
Start with the Free Training Library at Free Training Library, choose a subject and course, and work through the written lessons and available videos. You can use the free learning without signing in. If you want a certificate, review the relevant course’s assessment, completion requirements and price before purchasing its assessment and certification option. You must meet the stated course requirements and pass the assessment to earn the certificate. If you have already paid but cannot find your access, check your order confirmation and course-access emails, and sign in using the email address used at checkout. If access is still missing, contact Contact support with your order reference before placing another order.
QWhy are your food safety lessons free?
We offer free food safety lessons so people can build their knowledge before deciding whether they need certification. You can explore a subject, revisit an unfamiliar topic or see how the learning is presented without first buying an assessment. This can help you decide whether the content matches your role and learning needs. Assessment and certification are a separate, optional purchase, with the relevant price shown on the course page. Watching or reading the free lessons alone does not award a certificate. Begin learning at Free Training Library.
QCan I buy food safety products or explore resources without taking a course?
Yes. You can shop for workplace products without enrolling on a course. Our product categories include food safety posters, stickers, appliance tags, books, folders and folder refills. Before ordering, check the product description and available options, including dimensions, pack quantity and intended use, so you choose an item suitable for your workplace. Browse current products at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/collections/physical-products. You can also explore our Resource Centre at Resource Centre for learning material and the resource sections available on the website.
QHow can I check course information and report an error?
We aim to keep our food safety information clear, practical and aligned with relevant guidance. Before buying a course, read its overview, intended audience and assessment and certificate information. If a detail you need is missing or unclear, ask us to confirm it before you purchase. To report information that appears incorrect or out of date, use Contact support. Include the page link, course and lesson name where relevant, the wording you are concerned about, and a link to any guidance that appears to contradict it. These details help us investigate the specific issue.
QCan I suggest a new course, resource or website improvement?
Yes. We welcome suggestions about courses, learning resources, products and the website. For a new topic, explain what you would like to learn and the workplace situation you need help with. For an improvement to existing content, include the page link or lesson name, explain what was missing or confusing, and describe what would make it more useful. Send your feedback through Contact support. If your message concerns an order or an access problem, choose the relevant support topic and include your reference so it can be handled as a customer enquiry.
QHow can I contact National Food Safety and get help with a problem?
Use our Contact Us form at Contact support and choose the topic that best matches your enquiry. For help with a course, purchase or certificate, include the course title, your order or certificate reference where available, and the email address used for the purchase. For a website problem, include the page address, any error message, your device and browser, and what you were trying to do. If live chat is unavailable, use the message form. Response times depend on the type of enquiry and current support demand.
Choosing the Right Course
QHow do I choose the right food hygiene or food safety course for my job?
Start with the work you actually do, the decisions you are responsible for and any training requirements your employer has given you. Someone preparing food needs different knowledge from someone supervising staff or managing a food safety system. Identify your main learning need, such as food hygiene, allergen awareness, HACCP, workplace health and safety or hazardous substances. Then compare the course’s intended audience and content with your duties and existing knowledge. Browse Browse courses using the subject and level filters. If your search shows no matching courses, clear the filters and review the full catalogue.
QWhat is the difference between Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Food Hygiene?
Level 1 Food Hygiene introduces basic awareness for people working around food or handling pre-packaged products. Level 2 focuses on everyday food preparation, handling and service, making it a relevant starting point for chefs, kitchen assistants and other hands-on food handlers. Level 3 focuses on supervising food safety, supporting staff and monitoring working practices. Choose according to your duties: being new to a food-preparation job does not automatically make Level 1 the best fit. Compare Level 1 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-1-food-hygiene-safety, Level 2 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-hygiene-safety and Level 3 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-3-food-hygiene-safety.
QWho should consider Level 4 Food Safety Management?
Level 4 Food Safety Management is aimed at people with substantial responsibility for managing food safety, such as senior managers, head chefs and food business owners overseeing systems and procedures. It may be relevant if your responsibilities include reviewing HACCP-based controls, organising staff training, assessing whether procedures are effective and deciding what corrective action is needed. Compare those responsibilities with the course content and confirm its entry requirements before purchasing. If your main responsibility is day-to-day supervision, also compare Level 3. Read the Level 4 course details at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-4-food-safety-management.
QCan I start with Level 2 or Level 3 without completing a lower-level course?
A course’s level number does not, by itself, tell you whether a previous certificate is required. Check the Entry Requirements section for the course you want to take, including any required qualifications or assumed knowledge. Relevant work experience may help you understand the material, but it does not automatically replace a formal prerequisite where one applies. If the requirements are missing or unclear, contact us before purchasing a preparatory course or a higher-level assessment. Send the course title and a brief description of your previous learning and experience through Contact support.
QWhich course should I choose for my type of food business or workplace?
Choose according to the tasks carried out in your workplace and check that the course content covers them. For example, staff preparing food in a café, takeaway or catering business can begin by reviewing Level 2 Food Hygiene, while people supervising those activities can compare Level 3. Food retail, manufacturing, care and education settings may have additional procedures or employer requirements that need to be considered. Check the intended audience and topics rather than relying only on the business type. Browse Browse courses and identify any specialist training your workplace requires alongside general food safety learning.
QWhich food hygiene course should I choose for a home food business or home baking?
For home baking, home catering or preparing food for sale, begin by reviewing training that covers the food-handling activities you carry out. Level 2 Food Hygiene is a useful course to consider where you prepare or handle unpackaged food, with topics such as contamination prevention, cleaning, storage and temperature control. You should also consider your responsibilities for ingredients and allergen information. Running a business from home does not automatically make basic awareness training sufficient. Review https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-hygiene-safety. For official guidance on setting up a home food business, including responsibilities beyond training, visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/starting-a-food-business.
QDo I need allergen training as well as food hygiene training?
You need allergen knowledge appropriate to your responsibilities, but whether you need another course depends on what your existing training covered. Check for gaps if you handle ingredients, prepare food for customers with allergies, maintain allergen information or answer customer questions. A general food hygiene course may introduce allergens, while a dedicated course can explore ingredient checks, cross-contact prevention and communication in greater detail. Compare the modules with your workplace procedures before purchasing additional training, and check any specific employer requirement. Explore the Level 2 Food Allergy Awareness course at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-allergy-awareness.
QShould I choose Level 2 Food Allergy Awareness or Level 3 Food Allergy Management?
Level 2 Food Allergy Awareness focuses on understanding allergen risks and following safer everyday practices. It is aimed at people such as food handlers, kitchen staff and front-of-house staff who prepare food or communicate with customers. Level 3 Food Allergy Management focuses on overseeing allergen controls, staff practices and management responsibilities. Consider Level 3 if you help develop procedures, manage ingredient or menu changes, supervise staff or check that allergen information remains reliable. Compare the actual course content with those duties. View Level 2 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-allergy-awareness and Level 3 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-3-food-allergy-management.
QWhat is the difference between food hygiene training and HACCP training?
Food hygiene training focuses on everyday practices that keep food safe, including personal hygiene, cleaning, contamination prevention, storage and temperature control. HACCP training focuses on a structured approach to identifying food safety hazards and managing the controls used to address them. The subjects overlap, but the depth and purpose of the learning differ. If you need practical food-handling knowledge, review the food hygiene courses first. If your responsibilities include understanding, monitoring or developing a HACCP-based system, compare the dedicated HACCP course content as well. Browse both subjects at Browse courses and match the topics to the procedures you work with.
QShould I choose Level 2 or Level 3 HACCP?
Level 2 HACCP introduces the principles of hazard analysis and food safety controls for people who need to understand and follow workplace procedures. Level 3 HACCP focuses more on creating, implementing, monitoring and reviewing those procedures, making it relevant to supervisory roles and people involved in a HACCP team. A useful question is whether you mainly follow established checks or help decide how the system should operate and improve. Check the course content and entry requirements against that responsibility. View Level 2 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-haccp and Level 3 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-3-haccp.
QShould I choose Level 2 or Level 3 Health and Safety in the Workplace?
Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace focuses on recognising everyday hazards, understanding employee responsibilities and following safe working procedures. Level 3 focuses on supervisory and management responsibilities, including managing risks, supporting staff and maintaining safety procedures. Consider the decisions you make at work: following an established procedure and taking responsibility for reviewing that procedure involve different learning needs. General online training should also be supported by instruction on the actual equipment, risks and emergency arrangements in your workplace. Compare Level 2 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-health-safety-in-the-workplace and Level 3 at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-3-health-safety-in-the-workplace.
QWhen should I choose Level 2 COSHH training?
Consider Level 2 COSHH if your work involves using, handling or being exposed to hazardous substances, including cleaning chemicals. The course covers understanding hazards, safety information, exposure controls and the importance of following workplace instructions. This can be relevant to kitchen staff, cleaners and others working with substances that may harm health. Check your existing training and workplace risk assessment to identify any knowledge gaps. Your employer should also explain the particular substances, precautions and emergency procedures used at your site. Review the course at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-coshh.
QShould I take the Food Hygiene Refresher Course or a full food hygiene course?
A refresher course can be useful if you have previous food hygiene training and want to revisit essential practices. A full course may be a better fit if you are new to food handling, have substantial knowledge gaps or are taking on responsibilities beyond your previous learning. For example, moving from food preparation into supervision may call for reviewing supervisory course content. Check your employer’s requirements as well: a refresher certificate should not be assumed to replace a specifically requested Level 2 or Level 3 course. Review the refresher content at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/food-hygiene-refresher-course and compare it with your current duties.
QIs a particular food hygiene certificate legally required?
There is no single named food hygiene certificate that every food handler must hold. Food businesses must ensure that food handlers receive supervision, instruction and/or training appropriate to their duties. People responsible for developing and maintaining food safety management procedures also need suitable training for that responsibility. A relevant course and assessment can help build knowledge and provide evidence of learning, while employers or organisations may specify a particular certificate. Check the exact requirement before purchasing. For advice about the training appropriate to a particular food business, contact the local environmental health or food safety team through https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council.
QHow can I check whether a course meets my employer’s requirements?
Ask your employer for the exact subject, level and type of evidence they require, including any named qualification or awarding organisation. Then send them the page for the NFS course you are considering and ask them to confirm whether it meets that requirement before you purchase. A course title containing a level number does not, on its own, establish that it is a particular regulated qualification or that every employer will accept it. If recognition or accreditation details are unclear, send us the employer’s wording and the course title through Contact support so the relevant details can be checked.
QCan I try the free lessons before buying the assessment and certificate?
Yes. Use the Free Training Library at Free Training Library to explore the written lessons and available videos before deciding whether to purchase assessment and certification. This lets you check the subject matter, the way information is explained and whether the learning seems appropriate for your experience. You can use the free learning without signing in. When you have identified a suitable course, review its assessment, completion requirements and price. The free lessons themselves do not award a certificate; certification requires the relevant purchase and successful completion of the stated requirements.
QWhat should I check if I need a particular language or accessibility support?
Check the language and format of both the learning materials and the assessment before buying. Consider whether you need captions, a particular reading format, support with navigation or an adjustment to an assessment arrangement. Try the available free lessons on the device you intend to use so you can assess how well the material works for you. Do not assume that every course offers the same language options or support arrangements. Contact Contact support with the course title and the practical support you need so the available options can be confirmed before payment.
QWhat should I compare before purchasing a course?
Compare the intended audience, course topics, entry requirements and learning format first. Then check the estimated study time, access period, assessment format, any time limit, pass requirements, retake arrangements, certificate details and total price for your chosen option. Allow time for reading, practice and assessment as well as watching videos. A short study estimate does not tell you whether the course covers everything your role requires. If an important detail is missing or marked as awaiting confirmation, ask about it before checkout. Start your comparison at Browse courses.
QHow do I choose suitable courses for a team with different job roles?
Group your staff by the tasks they perform and the responsibilities they hold, then compare the course content with each group’s needs. Food preparation staff, supervisors, staff handling allergen enquiries and people working with cleaning chemicals may need different combinations of learning. Consider previous training so you can identify genuine gaps and decide where refresher learning is appropriate. For help comparing options, send the business type, staff roles, number of learners in each group, relevant previous training and any required completion date through Contact support. This helps us understand your requirements without assuming every team member needs the same course.
QWhat information should I provide if I need help choosing a course?
Send us your job role, business or workplace type, the tasks you carry out and whether you supervise people or manage safety procedures. Include any previous training, the course you are considering and the exact wording of an employer’s requirement, if you have one. Mention any deadline or practical learning support you need. For example, you could explain that you prepare food, supervise two staff and have been asked to complete supervisory food hygiene training. These details help us compare your needs with the published course content. Ask for help at Contact support.
Free Training Videos & Learning Resources
QWhat free training videos and learning resources does National Food Safety offer?
National Food Safety’s free learning library covers food hygiene, food allergens, HACCP, workplace health and safety, and COSHH. Lessons include written learning material, with training videos where available. You can use these materials to explore a topic, revisit something from your training or prepare questions to discuss with your supervisor. Start with the free training library at Free Training Library. For guides, checklists and other learning aids, visit the Resource Centre at Resource Centre and open the relevant item to check its content and availability.
QDo I need to register or pay before I can use the free lessons?
You can access our free written lessons without creating an NFS account or buying an assessment or certificate. Open the training library and choose the free learning option for the course you want to study. Assessment and certification are separate and have their own purchase and completion requirements. Embedded videos may also display YouTube’s own consent, account or availability messages. If you reach a checkout when you only want to study, return to Free Training Library and select Start learning for the relevant collection.
QHow do I find free food safety training for a particular course or topic?
Open Free Training Library and search for a subject such as food hygiene, allergens or HACCP. Use the subject and course-level filters to narrow the results, then select the relevant learning collection. If nothing appears, use Reset or Show all collections and try a broader search term. Search and filtering controls require JavaScript. If those controls do not respond, check whether your browser is blocking JavaScript for the site, use the visible course collections, or ask your IT administrator for help on a managed device.
QHow should I use the training videos and written lesson content together?
Start by reading the lesson introduction so you know what the topic covers. Watch the video if one is available, then review the written guide, practical examples and key points. Use the reflection questions to check your understanding and think about how the guidance applies to your role. Keep a note of anything you need to clarify with your supervisor before applying it at work. Reflection questions support your learning; completing them does not mean you have passed the separate certificate assessment.
QWhy does a lesson have written content but no video?
A message saying “Video not yet available” means there is currently no video to play for that lesson. You can study the written material provided and use the lesson navigation to continue learning. Refreshing the page or buying certification will not make an unavailable video appear. If you see a video player with an error message instead, record the wording and try the playback troubleshooting steps. Report a persistent problem, including the lesson title and page link, at Contact support.
QWhat is the difference between free learning and paid assessment or certification?
Free learning gives you access to the published study material. To obtain an NFS certificate, choose the appropriate assessment and certification option and complete its stated requirements, including passing the assessment. Reading lessons, answering reflection questions or marking a lesson complete does not itself award a certificate. If your employer has specified a subject, course level or particular qualification, check that the option meets those requirements before purchasing. View the current assessment and certification options and their product details at Browse courses.
QCan I return to previous lessons or watch a training video again?
You can return to available lesson pages to revise a topic or watch an available video again. Use the Previous lesson, Next lesson or Browse course lessons controls where shown, or find the collection through Free Training Library. Bookmark the exact lesson page and note the title or point you reached so you can find it easily next time. If an older bookmark no longer opens, search for the topic in the current library and report the old link if you cannot find the lesson.
QCan I use the free lessons on a phone, tablet or computer?
Open the lesson in a current web browser on your phone, tablet or computer. Video controls require JavaScript, and streaming needs an internet connection. On a smaller screen, rotating your device or using the player’s full-screen control, where available, may make the content easier to follow. If a video will not play, try another current browser to help identify whether the problem relates to your browser settings. On a managed work or school device, ask your IT administrator to check restrictions affecting embedded YouTube videos.
QWhy am I asked to load YouTube content or review my cookie choices?
Some lesson pages ask you to select Load lesson before your browser connects to YouTube. Video loading also follows the site’s cookie preferences. If the player remains blocked, review the available media or cookie controls and decide whether you want to allow that content. There is no need to change unrelated privacy settings to read the written lesson. If you prefer not to load the video, continue with the written material provided. A hosting-platform prompt is separate from purchasing an NFS assessment or certificate.
QWhat should I do if a training video will not start?
First, check that the lesson has a video available. Select Load lesson if shown, then press Play, as your browser may prevent automatic playback. Use Retry player where available and reload the page once. Check whether another lesson plays and whether your browser is up to date. If scripts or embedded media are blocked, review the relevant site permission or ask your IT administrator on a managed device. If the problem continues, send the lesson link and exact error message through Contact support. You can continue reading the written lesson while investigating the problem.
QWhy does a training video keep buffering or look blurry?
Buffering can happen when the connection cannot deliver video data quickly enough, although browser or device problems can also contribute. If the player offers a Quality setting, try a lower setting, pause other downloads or streams and retry on a stable connection. For a blurry picture, select a higher available quality once playback is stable. Check whether the same problem affects other lessons. If only one recording remains unclear, note the lesson link and the point in the video affected. YouTube’s official playback guidance is available at https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3037019?hl=en.
QWhat should I check if a training video has no sound?
Check the video player’s speaker icon, the browser tab’s mute setting and your device volume. Make sure sound is being sent to the speakers or headphones you intend to use, particularly if Bluetooth headphones, a monitor or a docking station is connected. Test another lesson or audio source to see whether the problem affects one video or the whole device. If only one lesson is silent, record its link and where the sound stops. YouTube’s audio troubleshooting guide is available at https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6397026?hl=en.
QWhat does “video unavailable”, “private video” or a player error mean?
These messages can indicate that a video has been removed, made private, restricted by its owner or prevented from playing within another website. Some player errors therefore need a change by NFS or the video provider. Reload once, then note the exact message or error code and report it with the course name, lesson title and page link at Contact support. Use the written lesson where available. Buying an assessment or certificate does not resolve a restricted or broken video.
QAre captions or alternatives to video available if I need them?
If a video has captions, use the CC button or the player’s subtitle settings to select an available option. Caption and language availability can vary between videos. Automatic captions may mishear words or numbers, so check unclear wording against the written guidance and ask for clarification if needed. Written lesson content provides another way to study, although it may not reproduce every word spoken in the video. If you need a transcript or a particular accessible format, tell us which lesson you are using and what would help at Contact support so we can confirm the available options.
QHow can I tell whether my learning progress has been saved?
Check the saving message on the lesson page. A progress bar or completed tick alone does not confirm that your work has been stored in an account. If the page says progress is remembered on this device, return using the same browser and device; do not assume it will transfer elsewhere. Rely on account or cross-device saving only when the page confirms it. Use the completion control where provided, and keep a bookmark and a note of your place if saving is not confirmed. Clearing browser site data can remove locally stored progress. Study progress remains separate from assessment results.
QCan I download the training videos or use learning resources offline?
Use the lesson videos online unless the page or video provider offers an authorised download or offline option. Bookmarking a lesson page does not download its embedded video. Documents and templates are separate: where a resource supplies an actual downloadable file, save it to your device and check that it opens before relying on it somewhere without internet access. Follow the usage terms supplied with the item. Before reusing an older downloaded resource, revisit its source page to check whether a newer version or updated guidance is available.
QWhere can I find food safety guides, templates, checklists and online tools?
Start at Resource Centre to browse the Resource Centre. For workplace forms such as temperature records, cleaning records and allergen management templates, visit https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/pages/templates-download. For online food safety tools and calculators, visit https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/pages/free-tools. Open the item you need and check its purpose, instructions, format and availability. If a resource card takes you to a general category page, look for the named item there. If you still cannot locate it, send us the resource title and the page link through the contact form.
QWhat should I do if a resource download opens a preview or does not work?
A preview is not always a downloaded file. Look for an explicit file-download control on the page or in the document viewer, then check your browser’s Downloads list. If the link only reopens a preview or returns to the same page without providing a file, report the resource name and URL at Contact support. If a file downloads but will not open, check its format and use a suitable PDF reader, word processor or spreadsheet application. Extract a ZIP file before opening its contents. Include any error message when reporting the problem.
QHow should I use food safety templates and online tools in my workplace?
Choose a resource that matches the task and read its instructions before using it. When a template is provided for workplace use, adapt any editable fields to reflect your actual activities, equipment and staff responsibilities. Record checks you carry out, including problems found and the action taken. For a calculator or checker, confirm the information entered, units and assumptions before using the result. These resources can help you organise and review your procedures, but a completed form or online result does not establish that the procedures are being followed correctly in your workplace.
QCan I share the free lessons or reuse NFS videos and resources?
Share the original public lesson or resource link so other people can open the source page and see the current material. Before copying, editing, re-uploading or selling a video or resource, check the permissions supplied with that item. Free access does not automatically provide unrestricted permission to reuse the content. If your intended use is unclear, such as including NFS material in your own training package, explain the proposed use at Contact support. Embedded YouTube content is also subject to the platform’s terms at https://www.youtube.com/static?template=terms.
QHow can I report a mistake, outdated information or a broken resource link?
Report the issue at Contact support and include the lesson or resource title, its page link and the exact wording, image or download that needs attention. For a video, include the playback time where the issue appears. Explain what seems incorrect or outdated and, if relevant, include a link to the official guidance you believe should be considered. For a broken link, tell us what you selected and where it took you. If the disputed point could affect safe food handling, clarify it with your supervisor before applying it at work.
QWhat information should I send if I still need help with a video or learning resource?
Use Contact support and choose the enquiry topic closest to your problem. Include the lesson or resource title, its full page link, your device, browser name and version if known, and the exact error message. Tell us whether the problem affects one item or several, when it happened and which troubleshooting steps you have tried. For a download, include the filename and format if you received a file. Send the initial message through the form; if supporting screenshots or files are needed, the team can request them securely.
Accounts, Login & Course Access
QDo I need a National Food Safety account to access the free training lessons?
You can access our free written lessons without creating an National Food Safety account or purchasing an assessment. Training videos are included where available. Start learning at Free Training Library. Account sign-in becomes relevant when you need to check purchases or follow access instructions for a paid assessment. Saving learning progress is a separate feature: check the saving message on the lesson page to see what is available. Reading free lessons or creating an account does not itself award a certificate.
QHow do I sign in to my National Food Safety account?
Open https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account or select My Account on the NFS website. Use the email address associated with your purchase and follow the sign-in instructions displayed. If you choose email-code sign-in, retrieve the verification code from that inbox and enter it on the sign-in page. After signing in, check your order and follow any course-access instructions supplied with the purchase. If the account opens but your order or assessment is missing, contact us at Contact support with your order reference.
QDo I need to register before signing in for the first time?
For email-code sign-in, you do not need to create a separate password before your first visit. Start at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account and use the email address you entered at checkout. Shopify customer accounts can recognise an existing customer profile through that email address. Signing in with a different address can create a separate profile, which may explain why an account appears empty. If you have already purchased, check your order confirmation before choosing which email address to use.
QWhy am I asked for a sign-in code instead of a password?
This sign-in method uses a one-time verification code sent to your email instead of a separate NFS password. Enter your email address, open the code message and follow the instructions on the sign-in screen. There is no NFS password to reset when you use this method. If an older bookmark or help link takes you somewhere unexpected, return to https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account and start again. Follow any different instructions shown if you deliberately choose another available sign-in option.
QWhat should I do if my NFS sign-in code has not arrived?
First, check the email address shown on the sign-in page for spelling mistakes. Search the correct inbox and its spam, junk and other filtered folders for a recent verification message. If you use a work email address, check whether your organisation filters or quarantines automated messages. Use the resend option when the sign-in page offers it and follow any waiting instructions displayed. If the code still does not arrive, contact Contact support with the email address used and the approximate time of the attempt. Do not send us a sign-in code.
QWhy is my sign-in code expired or not being accepted?
Return to the sign-in page and check whether it says the code has expired, is incorrect or belongs to a different sign-in attempt. Enter the code associated with your current attempt, taking care not to paste extra spaces or select an older message. If necessary, request a replacement using the option displayed and follow the on-screen instructions. Avoid making several overlapping attempts in different tabs. If a newly requested code is still rejected, report the exact error and when it happened at Contact support.
QWhat should I do if the login page will not load or keeps returning me to sign-in?
Open https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account in a normal, current web browser rather than inside an email or social-media app. The sign-in page requires JavaScript. Reload once and check whether browser settings or an extension are blocking the scripts or cookies needed for sign-in. On a managed device, ask your IT administrator for help with restrictions. Trying another current browser can help identify a browser-specific problem. Avoid clearing all browser data as your first step because this can remove locally stored learning progress. If the problem continues, report the page address and exact behaviour at Contact support.
QWhich email address should I use to find my order and assessment access?
Use the exact email address associated with your order or the learner-access instructions supplied to you. Check the original order confirmation rather than relying on whichever address your browser automatically fills in. If you have personal and work email accounts, confirm which one was used for the purchase. If someone else arranged the training, ask them to confirm the learner details and access instructions. When contacting support, explain if the email you are currently signing in with differs from the one used at checkout.
QI bought a course as a guest. How do I access my purchase?
Start by signing in at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account with the email address you entered at checkout. Check your order confirmation and any separate course-access message for instructions relating to the product you purchased. A guest purchase does not mean you should buy the same assessment again. If you can sign in but cannot find the purchase or its access instructions, contact Contact support with the order reference, course title and checkout email so we can investigate the connection between the order and your access.
QWhat should I do if I can no longer access my account email address?
If you cannot receive messages at the email address used for your account, contact Contact support using an address you can currently access. Explain that you have lost access to the original inbox and include the old email address, order reference and course title. We may need to verify that the account or purchase belongs to you before making changes. Signing in with a new email does not automatically bring across purchases or learning records from the old account. Never send your email password or a verification code.
QI entered the wrong email address at checkout. How can I get help?
Contact Contact support as soon as you notice the mistake. Include the order reference if available, course title, approximate purchase date, the incorrect email entered and the correct address. Explain whether the error affects order messages, account sign-in or assessment access. Correcting an order’s contact email does not automatically move the order or its learning records to a different account, so the full access issue needs checking. Avoid placing a duplicate order simply to try to fix the email address.
QWhy is my course order missing after I sign in?
Check the email shown in your signed-in account against the address used at checkout. If they differ, sign out and try the purchase email, provided you still have access to it. Confirm that the order was placed with National Food Safety and identify its reference and course title from the confirmation message. If an employer or another person purchased it, ask them for the learner-access instructions. If the order is still missing, contact Contact support with the relevant details so we can investigate.
QWhy can I see my order but cannot access the assessment?
First, confirm that the order contains the assessment or certification option for the exact course and level you want to take. Follow the access instructions in your order or course-access email, and check any requirements displayed before starting the assessment. An order appearing in your account does not, by itself, show that the assessment system has correctly recognised your access. If the assessment remains locked or asks you to purchase again, contact Contact support with the order reference, assessment page link and exact message. Ask us to check the existing purchase before paying again.
QWhat should I do if a payment appears on my bank account but I have no order confirmation or course access?
Check whether the bank entry is pending and search your inbox and junk folder for an NFS order confirmation. A transaction appearing in a banking app does not, by itself, confirm that an order has completed and been connected to assessment access. Contact Contact support with the checkout email, course title, approximate date, amount and any order reference. Explain whether you saw an order confirmation screen. Ask us to check what happened before attempting another payment. Do not include full card details, card security codes or online-banking credentials.
QWhen will I be able to access the assessment after purchasing?
Follow the activation terms and access instructions for the option you purchased. Where a course is sold with instant access after payment, use the supplied access route once payment is confirmed and complete any additional steps stated in the instructions. If the promised access is unavailable, contact Contact support with the order reference and the message you see, rather than waiting an arbitrary number of hours or buying again. Being able to start an assessment is separate from passing it and receiving a certificate.
QMy employer or someone else bought my training. How do I access it?
Ask the person who arranged the training for the order reference, exact course title and any instructions supplied for your learner access. Confirm which name and email address they provided for you. Use the access arranged for you rather than signing in to the purchaser’s personal account or asking them to share a login code. If no learner instructions have been provided, contact Contact support and explain who arranged the booking so we can check the appropriate access route.
QCan more than one learner use the same NFS account?
Keep account sign-in details and verification codes private. If you are arranging training for several people, contact us to confirm how each learner should receive access and have their assessment recorded against the correct person. Sharing one login can mix personal details, learning records and results, as well as expose order information. A quantity shown on a purchase does not explain how learners have been assigned. For help with a group booking, send the order reference and number of learners to Contact support.
QHow do I find the correct assessment if I have purchased more than one course?
Match the full course title and level in your order confirmation to the assessment you intend to take. For example, different levels of Food Hygiene or HACCP should not be treated as the same purchase. Use the course-specific access instructions supplied with each order, and check the email associated with the relevant purchase. Access to one assessment does not automatically establish access to every other course. If one purchased assessment opens and another does not, tell us which works, which is missing and the relevant order references at Contact support.
QHow long does my paid course or assessment access last?
Check the access period, the event that starts it and any assessment deadline stated for your purchase. Recommended study time, paid access duration and certificate renewal guidance describe different things; one should not be used to infer another. If your product page or confirmation does not state the access period clearly, ask us to confirm it at Contact support with the course title and order reference. If an access-expired message appears, report it before purchasing again so we can check the terms that apply to your order.
QCan I access my learning and assessment on another device?
You can open the free learning pages and NFS sign-in page on another device using a current web browser. For paid assessment access, use the same learner identity and check the assessment’s device requirements before starting. Confirm that the assessment page loads correctly and that your connection is reliable. Avoid switching devices during a live or timed assessment unless its instructions explicitly allow it; do not assume an active attempt will transfer. Saved lesson progress may also depend on whether it is stored in your account or only on the original device.
QWhy is my learning progress missing or different on another device?
Look at the saving status on the lesson page. Progress remembered on one device may not appear in another browser or on another device. If account saving is offered, check that you are signed in with the same email address and that the page confirms the connection or saving action. Use a retry connection control if one is provided. Clearing site data or using a different browser can affect local records. If previously recorded progress is missing, contact Contact support with the course, lesson and devices involved. Report missing assessment results separately from lesson progress.
QHow should I use my NFS account on a shared computer?
On a shared computer, check that the account displayed is yours before opening orders or an assessment. When you finish, use the account’s Sign out or Log out control; simply closing a tab should not be treated as confirmation that you have signed out. Sign out of your email account too if you opened it to retrieve a code, and avoid saving sign-in details on the shared device. If someone else’s account opens automatically, sign out and begin again using your own email address.
QHow can I update my account name or email address?
Sign in at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account and look for your profile and the available edit controls. Follow the verification instructions if you change your email address. If a field cannot be edited or the change is rejected, contact Contact support and explain what needs correcting. Check that the learner name is accurate before taking an assessment. Updating an account profile should not be assumed to change an already-issued certificate or transfer an assessment to another person; ask us to review those changes separately.
QCan I combine purchases made using different email addresses?
Contact Contact support if purchases belonging to you are spread across different email addresses. Include the relevant order references, the addresses used and the email you want to use going forward. Changing an email address does not automatically combine separate customer profiles or move learning records. We need to check the purchases and how the associated assessment access is recorded before confirming the appropriate solution. Explain if either email belongs to an employer or another person, because their account and purchases should not be treated as yours.
QWhat information should I include when asking for help with login or course access?
Use Contact support and select the closest account, course-access or assessment topic. Include the order reference if available, course title, checkout email, current sign-in email if different, relevant page link and exact error message. Tell us your device and browser, when the issue happened and which steps you have tried. For a payment without confirmation, include the approximate purchase date and amount. Send the initial message through the form; supporting files can be requested securely if needed. Do not send passwords, sign-in codes or sensitive payment details.
Learning & Course Progress
QHow do I start learning on an NFS food safety course?
Open the free training library at Free Training Library, choose the relevant subject and course level, and select its learning collection. Check the course title before opening the first available lesson. Read the introduction and key points, then work through the lesson material and any available video. Free written learning does not require an NFS account or an assessment purchase. If you are studying towards certification, also check the completion and assessment requirements for the specific option you intend to purchase or have already purchased.
QWhat order should I follow when studying the modules and lessons?
For your first study session, follow the module and lesson order shown for the course. A module groups related topics, while individual lessons cover particular points within that group. Use the course lesson list and the available Previous and Next controls to move through the material. For revision, return to the lesson that covers the topic you need. Check the full course title and level so that you do not accidentally move into a different learning collection with different content or assessment requirements.
QCan I study at my own pace?
You can work through the available free written lessons at a pace that suits your understanding and schedule. Spend longer on unfamiliar topics and return to material that needs more attention. If you have purchased assessment access or are completing training for an employer, check any access period, completion deadline or other requirements that apply. Studying at your own pace does not mean a timed assessment can be paused or that paid access lasts indefinitely. Course-specific information is available through Browse courses.
QHow much time should I allow for learning and revision?
Use the study-time estimate for your chosen course as a planning guide, and allow additional time for reading, practical examples, reflection and revision where needed. Your previous knowledge and the amount of explanation you need will affect your study time. The combined length of the videos is not necessarily the total time needed to work through the learning material. Check any assessment deadline separately and plan your sessions around it. If the published information is unclear, ask about the specific course at Contact support.
QCan I take breaks and return to a lesson later?
Yes, you can leave an available learning page and return to continue studying later. Before taking a break, bookmark the lesson and note where you stopped. If the page offers progress saving, check that it confirms the save rather than assuming your place has been recorded automatically. When you return, review your last notes before continuing. Use a resume control if one is available, but keep your own reference to the topic or video position. Follow separate instructions for an assessment already in progress, particularly if it has a timer.
QCan I revisit previous lessons or replay a training video?
You can revisit available lessons through the course lesson list and replay an available video using its controls. This can help you review a difficult explanation, check a practical example or prepare for an assessment. Open the relevant lesson directly when revising; you do not need to clear browser data or delete your learning notes to read it again. Before selecting a restart or reset option, check what it says it will affect. Replaying a video should not be treated as confirmation that a new completion record has been saved.
QCan I move ahead if I already understand a topic?
For revision, you can use the available lesson links to find a topic you already understand or want to review. For formal course completion, follow the requirements stated for that course and assessment. Prior experience does not automatically remove a published learning requirement. If a lesson or assessment is unavailable, read the explanation shown before assuming that skipping ahead is allowed or that watching longer will unlock it. Contact Contact support if the page does not explain what you need to complete next.
QHow should I use the key points, lesson guide and practical examples?
Start with the key points to identify the main ideas, then read the lesson guide for the explanation behind them. Work through the practical example and consider what the person in that situation should notice, check and do. Watch the available video as part of the same study session, then use the reflection activity to check your understanding. If an example seems different from your workplace, note the difference and ask your supervisor how the principle applies to your actual procedures, equipment or responsibilities.
QAre the reflection questions part of the final assessment?
The reflection questions in the free learning pathway are practice activities, separate from the paid course assessment. Use them to think through the topic and identify gaps in your understanding. Try answering before reading the model answer or explanation, where one is provided. Completing a reflection activity does not mean you have passed an assessment or earned a certificate. To check the assessment method and completion requirements for certification, open the relevant course at Browse courses.
QWhat should I do if I answer a practice question incorrectly?
Read the explanation provided and identify which part of the topic you misunderstood. Return to the relevant section of the lesson, then work through the scenario again in your own words. Focus on explaining why the correct action is appropriate and what could go wrong with the other approach. An incorrect response to a reflection activity is not a final-assessment failure. If the question or explanation still seems unclear, send the lesson link and the specific point you need help with through Contact support.
QWhat is a useful way to take notes and check my understanding?
Keep brief notes in your own words rather than copying the whole lesson. For a practical topic, useful headings are what could go wrong, what needs checking and what action should follow. Include the lesson title and link so you can return to the original guidance. After studying, put your notes aside and explain the main idea or work through the example from memory, then reopen the material to check your explanation. Mark anything uncertain for revision or discussion with your supervisor.
QHow can I get help if I do not understand a lesson or need extra learning support?
Use the Training support link on the lesson page, or contact Contact support. Include the course and lesson title, the term or explanation you are finding difficult and what you currently understand about it. For a video, include the point in the recording you are referring to. If you need a particular learning format or adjustment, explain what would help so we can confirm the available options. You can revisit the written guidance while waiting for clarification; avoid guessing where the uncertainty could affect safe working.
QHow can I apply what I have learned in my workplace?
Compare the lesson with the current procedures used in your workplace. Ask your supervisor where the relevant instructions are kept, who is responsible for the task and how the procedure should be carried out with your equipment and products. Use the practical examples to prepare useful questions and identify anything you need demonstrated. Discuss differences before changing a working method. General course learning supports your understanding, but it does not replace the practical instruction, supervision or business-specific food safety procedures needed for your role.
QHow do I record a lesson as complete?
After studying a lesson, use its completion action if one is offered. Follow any requirements displayed beside that action, then check for a completion or saving confirmation. Some lessons provide a Mark lesson complete button, while written completion is available only where that route has been enabled. Opening a page or reaching the end of a video should not be assumed to record completion automatically. If no action is available, keep a note of the lesson you studied and ask support if this prevents you meeting a stated course requirement.
QWhy is a lesson still marked incomplete after I have watched or studied it?
Check whether the lesson requires you to select a completion action after studying it. If the action is available, use it and look for the resulting confirmation. Progress controls require JavaScript, so check whether your browser is blocking the necessary page functions. Also check the saving status and your internet connection. If an account-connection retry is offered, use it and review the new status. A player retry addresses video loading and should not be assumed to restore progress. If the lesson remains incomplete, report its link and the exact behaviour at Contact support.
QWhy does a written lesson not show a completion button?
A written lesson can be available to study without offering a completion button. The current lesson guidance explains that written completion is offered only where a written-completion route is enabled. Read the material, work through the examples and keep a personal note of what you have studied. If a missing completion action prevents you meeting a stated requirement, contact Contact support with the course, lesson link and requirement involved. Buying an assessment should not be used as a troubleshooting step for a missing study control.
QWhy can I not open the next lesson?
Read the message beside the lesson or navigation control first. A lesson marked unavailable may not yet have published learning material. If the page identifies itself as the last available lesson, return to the course list to review what is available. Where the page states a prerequisite, follow that specific instruction. If a lesson appears available but its link fails, try opening it from the course lesson list and report the broken link if it still fails. Do not assume every disabled Next control means you must watch a video again.
QCan I continue learning if a lesson has written content but no video?
Yes, where written material is available, you can read the lesson guide, review the key points and work through the practical example and reflection activity. A message saying that the video is not yet available describes the video’s availability; it does not prevent you using the written content provided. Record completion only through a completion action offered for that lesson. If a published course requirement specifically depends on material you cannot access, report the lesson and requirement through Contact support.
QWhat does the course progress percentage mean?
The course progress display is a study record. Use it alongside the individual lesson statuses and saving messages to understand what the page has recorded. A percentage alone does not establish how long you studied, how much of a video you watched, your assessment score or whether a certificate has been awarded. If the percentage appears inconsistent with the lessons shown as complete, note both the percentage and the affected lesson titles, then contact Contact support so the recorded progress can be checked.
QDoes reaching 100% progress mean I have passed or earned a certificate?
No. A study-progress display showing 100% does not, by itself, mean you have passed the final assessment or earned a certificate. Certification depends on the requirements for the specific course or assessment option, including passing the required assessment. Check the published completion requirements and your actual assessment result. If you have purchased the assessment but cannot access the next step after completing the required learning, contact Contact support with your order reference, course title and the message shown.
QWhy is my learning progress different on another device?
Check whether the lesson says progress is saved to your account or remembered only on the current device. Device-based records may not appear in another browser or on another device. If account saving is available, use the same account and check that the page confirms a successful connection or save. You can sign in through https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account. Signing in alone should not be treated as proof that earlier device records have transferred. If the records still differ, tell support which devices, browsers and lessons are affected.
QWhy has my recorded course progress disappeared or changed?
Start by checking the course title and level, the account in use and whether you have changed browser or device. Check the lesson’s current saving status and whether site data has recently been cleared. Compare the current lesson list with your notes or bookmarks so you can identify exactly what is missing or different. Avoid resetting the course or clearing more data while investigating. Contact Contact support with the last progress you remember, the current display and when you first noticed the change.
QHow can I keep track of my learning if progress saving is unavailable?
Keep a simple personal study log containing the course title, lesson name, date studied, where you stopped and anything you want to review. Bookmark the relevant lesson pages and keep the notes somewhere you can access again. This gives you a practical way to continue studying while a saving problem is investigated. Your personal log does not automatically update the website or replace any required assessment record. If missing online completion affects a stated requirement, ask support to check it at Contact support.
QWhat should I review before starting the final assessment?
Review the course’s stated learning and completion requirements, then revisit any topics you cannot explain confidently in your own words. Use the practical examples and reflection explanations to check your understanding. Before starting, read the assessment instructions for the time limit, permitted materials, device requirements and how answers are submitted. Confirm that you have access to the correct course and level. If any instruction is unclear, ask for clarification before beginning a timed attempt. Current course and assessment details are available at Browse courses.
QWhat information should I send when reporting a lesson or progress problem?
Use the Training support link on the affected lesson, or contact Contact support. Include the course and lesson title, full page link, what you expected to happen, what happened instead and the exact message shown. For progress problems, include the displayed percentage or lesson status, saving message, device, browser and whether the issue began after changing devices. Mention the steps you have tried and an order reference if paid assessment access is affected. Send the initial message through the form; supporting screenshots can be requested securely if needed.
Exams, Assessments & Retakes
QDo I need to buy an assessment if the training lessons are free?
The free learning pages let you study the published lesson material, with videos where available. To take a paid assessment for certification, you need access to the appropriate assessment and certification option. Check the exact course title, level and included assessment before purchasing at Browse courses. Reading free lessons, completing reflection activities or adding a course to your basket does not itself provide a passing assessment result or award a certificate.
QDo I have to complete every lesson before taking the assessment?
Complete any learning explicitly required before starting your assessment, and follow the instructions for the specific course. Our published certificate requirements include completing the required course content and passing the final assessment. Check which activities count towards those requirements rather than assuming every optional resource must be completed. A percentage on the free learning pathway does not, by itself, confirm assessment eligibility. If the assessment remains unavailable and the page does not explain what is outstanding, contact Contact support with your course title and order reference.
QWhere do I start the assessment after purchasing?
Sign in at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account using the email associated with your purchase or the learner-access instructions supplied to you. Follow the assessment-access link or instructions in your order or course-access message. Where an assessment action is provided on the course page, check that it opens the correct course and level. The reflection questions within free lessons are separate practice activities. If you cannot find the assessment instructions, contact Contact support with your order reference instead of purchasing the same option again.
QWhy is my assessment still locked or unavailable?
Check that you are using the correct account or assigned learner access and that the purchase covers the assessment you are trying to open. Read any message explaining a payment, learning, access-period or other requirement. If the order is visible but the assessment remains locked, record the exact message and page link. Contact Contact support with the course title and order reference so the access issue can be investigated. Do not assume a purchase button means you need to pay again for an assessment you already bought.
QHow should I prepare for my NFS assessment?
Review the course material and revisit topics you cannot explain confidently in your own words. Work through the practical examples and reflection explanations, paying attention to why an action is appropriate. Before starting, read the assessment instructions, confirm the course and learner details, check the time limit and make sure you have a suitable device and reliable connection. Arrange enough uninterrupted time unless the assessment expressly supports breaks. Clarify any question about permitted resources or support before beginning the timed attempt.
QAre lesson reflections and practice questions the same as the final assessment?
No. The reflection questions in the free learning pathway are practice activities that help you check your understanding. They are separate from the paid final assessment and do not provide a certificate result. Use the available explanations to identify topics for revision, then follow the assessment-access instructions for the option you purchased. Do not treat completing a practice question, reaching the last lesson or seeing a learning-progress percentage as confirmation that the final assessment has been submitted or passed.
QWhat question format does the assessment use, and how many questions are there?
The published course pages describe online multiple-choice assessments. Question numbers depend on the course: for example, Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety lists 42 questions, while Level 3 HACCP lists 74. Check the Exam and Certificate section for your chosen course at Browse courses. Read each question’s selection instructions carefully, including whether it asks for one answer or more than one. If the assessment instructions conflict with the information supplied for your purchase, ask us to clarify before starting.
QWhat mark do I need to pass my food safety assessment?
The pass requirement is specific to the course. The published Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety requirement is 36 correct answers out of 42, while Level 3 HACCP requires 68 out of 74. Use the exact requirement for your assessment rather than assuming a universal pass percentage. A rounded percentage should not replace a published required score. Check your course’s Exam and Certificate section, and contact Contact support before starting if the product information and assessment instructions disagree.
QHow much time do I have to complete the assessment?
Check the time limit for the specific assessment before you begin. The published examples include 84 minutes for Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety and 148 minutes for Level 3 HACCP. These are total assessment limits, separate from recommended course study time and any deadline for using your purchased access. Plan your session around the full permitted period and any stated submission instructions. If a different limit appears from the one supplied for your purchase, ask for clarification before starting the timed attempt.
QIs there a deadline for taking or retaking my assessment?
Check the assessment-access period and any expiry date provided with your purchase. The time allowed for one attempt is different from the period during which you can start or retake the assessment. Certificate renewal or expiry information also describes a separate matter. An unlimited-retakes statement should not be interpreted as confirmation that assessment access never expires. If no access deadline has been provided, contact Contact support with your course and order reference so the applicable arrangements can be confirmed.
QCan I use notes, course materials or other resources during the assessment?
Use only the resources permitted by the assessment instructions. Check whether the assessment allows course notes, written materials, websites, calculators, translation tools or AI tools before you begin. Do not assume that access to free lessons means you may consult them during the assessment, or that an open-book arrangement permits every type of assistance. If the rules are not clear, ask about the specific course at Contact support before starting a timed attempt.
QCan someone help me answer the assessment questions?
The assessment should demonstrate your own understanding and be completed under your own learner identity. Follow the stated rules on assistance, and do not ask another person to take the assessment or select answers on your behalf. If you need support with reading, communication or accessibility, arrange it before the assessment and confirm what is permitted. Assistance that has been agreed for accessibility should follow the approved arrangements. Explain the support you need at Contact support before starting.
QWill I need a webcam, an invigilator or identity documents?
Check the instructions for your specific assessment for any identification, webcam, microphone, supervision or appointment requirements. The fact that a course is online does not establish which of these arrangements apply. If a check or supervised session is required, confirm the equipment, documents and booking arrangements before starting the assessment. If the requirements have not been explained, contact Contact support with the course title. Where supporting documents are needed, ask how to provide them through the appropriate secure route.
QHow can I request extra time or other assessment adjustments?
Contact Contact support before starting the assessment and explain the task you find difficult and the support that would help. Examples might include additional time, an accessible format or permitted reading support. Include the course title and order reference if you have purchased. If a particular arrangement is essential to your ability to take the assessment, ask about it before purchasing. Confirm what has been agreed and how it will be applied before beginning; do not assume that the timer or format will change automatically.
QWhich device and browser should I use for the assessment?
Check the device and browser requirements for the assessment you intend to take. Use a suitable device with a current browser, a reliable internet connection and enough battery power or a mains connection. Confirm that you can sign in and read the assessment instructions clearly before selecting the action that starts an attempt. A lesson working on your phone does not establish that the assessment supports the same setup. If controls, text or required checks are not working properly, resolve the issue before starting through Contact support.
QCan I pause the assessment and resume it later?
Only pause or leave an active attempt if the assessment instructions explicitly support it and explain what happens to the timer and answers. Closing the tab, signing out or disconnecting from the internet should not be treated as a pause. Plan an uninterrupted session where pause behaviour has not been confirmed. If you need planned breaks as an assessment adjustment, request them before starting. For an unexpected interruption, note what happened and the attempt status, then contact Contact support if the recovery instructions are unclear.
QCan I go back to earlier questions or change my answers?
Use the assessment’s own navigation and review controls where they are provided. Follow any rules about returning to previous questions, saving selections and changing answers before final submission. Avoid using the browser’s Back button as a substitute for assessment navigation. If an answer-saving indicator is shown, check it before moving on. Do not assume answers can be edited after the attempt has been submitted. Clarify any navigation restriction before starting if it affects how you need to complete the assessment.
QWhat should I do if my internet disconnects, my browser closes or my device stops working?
Note the time of the interruption and any error or attempt-status message. Keep the current page open where possible, restore your connection and use a recovery option only if the assessment provides one. Do not assume the timer has stopped or that every answer has been saved. Avoid repeatedly refreshing, opening competing attempts or purchasing again. Check the status of the existing attempt before starting another. If you cannot tell what was recorded, contact Contact support with the course, order or attempt reference, incident time and device details.
QWhat happens when the assessment time runs out?
Read the assessment instructions before starting to find out how time expiry is handled, including whether answers are submitted automatically or another action is required. If the timer reaches zero, follow the message displayed and check for a submission status or result. Do not assume that the attempt has passed, failed or been cancelled simply because the timer stopped. If the page freezes or the outcome is unclear, record the message and time, then contact Contact support before opening another attempt.
QHow do I submit my assessment and check that it was received?
Use the assessment’s own final submission action after reviewing your answers where review is permitted. Check any unanswered-question warning or confirmation prompt before proceeding. Submit once and wait for a clear acknowledgement, completed-attempt status or result. A course progress display, payment confirmation or closed browser tab is not proof that an assessment was received. If the page does not confirm what happened, record its status and contact Contact support rather than repeatedly submitting or assuming you need to start again.
QWhat should I do if I submit my assessment but cannot see a result?
For assessments advertised with immediate results, a score and pass/fail outcome should follow successful assessment completion. If no result appears, check any submission or processing message on the assessment page and retain the attempt reference if one is shown. Follow the supplied access route to check the existing attempt without starting a replacement. Contact Contact support with the course title, order or attempt reference, approximate submission time and message displayed. A missing result should not be treated as confirmation of a failed attempt.
QWhat happens if I do not pass the assessment?
Review the result and any feedback provided, then return to the lessons covering the topics you need to strengthen. Work through the explanations and practical examples before attempting the assessment again. Check the retake arrangements and access conditions for your purchase. If you believe a technical problem affected the attempt, report it with the incident time and error details before assuming the result needs an ordinary retake. Contact Contact support if you need the attempt or result checked.
QHow many retakes are available, and do they cost extra?
The current NFS course catalogue advertises unlimited retakes. Check the terms supplied for your course for any access deadline and information about retake charges; the number of attempts, their cost and the access period are separate details. Where a fee is not explained, ask us to clarify before paying. If the assessment unexpectedly asks you to buy access again or applies an attempt limit that conflicts with your purchase information, contact Contact support with the order reference and the exact message.
QDo I have to wait before taking another assessment attempt?
Follow the retake instructions and any waiting period stated for your assessment. An unlimited-retakes statement does not, by itself, specify whether another attempt is available immediately. Check that the previous attempt has reached a final status, and review the topics identified in its feedback before trying again. If no retake option appears or a waiting message is unclear, contact Contact support with your course title, order reference, last attempt time and the wording displayed.
QDoes an interrupted or incomplete assessment count as an attempt?
An interrupted or incomplete session needs to be checked against the assessment’s attempt record and applicable rules. A closed browser tab, lost connection or missing result does not reliably show whether an attempt was recorded. Keep the incident time, error message and any attempt reference, and check the status before starting another assessment. Contact Contact support if the position is unclear. Do not assume that a technical interruption automatically restores an attempt or that reopening the page starts a fresh one.
QCan I see feedback about the questions or topics I got wrong?
The published assessment information for courses such as Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety describes a score, pass/fail result and feedback identifying topics to revisit. Use the feedback available for your assessment to plan revision and return to the relevant lessons. This does not necessarily mean that every question, correct answer or downloadable report will be available. If the feedback promised for your purchase is missing or difficult to understand, contact Contact support with the course and attempt details.
QHow can I report a question error or ask for my assessment result to be reviewed?
Contact Contact support and explain whether you are reporting an unclear question, a suspected content error, a technical problem or a result you believe needs checking. Include the course title, order or attempt reference, question number if available, submission time and the reason for your concern. Where relevant, identify the course guidance you believe conflicts with the question. Ask what review options and timescales apply. If the issue arises during an active attempt, do not assume that contacting support pauses its timer.
QWhat happens after I pass, and how do I get my certificate?
A passing assessment result must be considered alongside the other completion requirements for your course. Once those requirements are met, follow the certificate instructions supplied for your enrolment. Check that the learner name and course details are correct. If you have a confirmed pass but cannot find the certificate or issuing instructions, contact Contact support with your order reference and result details. Do not retake an already-passed assessment or repurchase the course simply to try to make a certificate appear.
Certificates & Certificate Verification
QWhat do I need to complete to receive an NFS food safety certificate?
To receive your National Food Safety certificate, complete the requirements listed for your selected course, including the required learning and final assessment. Check that your assessment result confirms a pass and that the enrolment belongs to the correct learner. Review the Exam and Certificate section of your course page through Browse courses. If you believe you have completed the requirements but your status appears incorrect, contact Contact support with your course title, learner name and order reference.
QWill I receive a certificate for completing the free learning materials?
Completing the free learning materials does not automatically award an NFS certificate. The resources help you develop your knowledge and prepare for the separate assessment or certification option associated with your chosen course. If you need a certificate for work, check the course level, assessment requirements and certificate option before purchasing. You can explore the free resources at Free Training Library and follow the relevant course information to find the assessment and certification requirements.
QWill I receive a digital certificate, a printed certificate or both?
Check the certificate option on your selected course and order confirmation. For example, the NFS Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety page includes a digital certificate and offers a posted paper option. Review the available selection, price, delivery charge and number of printed copies before paying. Additional certificate copies relate to the same enrolment; they do not provide places for additional learners. You can check the options for this course at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-hygiene-safety.
QWhen and how will my certificate become available?
Check your course and order information for the certificate delivery method and any stated issue or delivery time. Once you have met the completion requirements, follow any certificate instructions supplied with your result or completion message. If no instructions are available, or a stated deadline has passed, contact Contact support with your course title, learner name, order reference and assessment completion date. If you need the certificate for a job start or inspection, include that date so the team understands your request.
QHow can I access and download my digital certificate?
Use the certificate access link or retrieval instructions supplied after completion. If those instructions direct you to your NFS account, sign in at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/account using the email associated with your enrolment or purchase. Where a download is provided, save the original certificate file to a folder you can find again. Check your inbox and junk folder for certificate messages. If you cannot find any retrieval instructions, contact Contact support with your course title and order reference.
QWhat should I do if I have passed my assessment but have not received my certificate?
First, confirm that the pass relates to the final assessment for the correct course. Check the email used for your enrolment, including junk mail, and review any certificate instructions supplied with your order or result. If an employer booked your training, ask which learner email was registered. If the certificate is still missing, contact Contact support with your learner name, course title, order reference, pass date and the completion message shown. Ask the team to check the existing record before purchasing again.
QWhat should I do if my certificate will not download or open?
Reopen the original certificate link and check your browser’s Downloads list to see whether the file has already saved. If the download stopped partway through, try again using a stable connection and a current browser. Open the file with an application suitable for its format; for a PDF, use a PDF reader. If a work device blocks the download, ask your IT team for help. For a persistent problem, contact Contact support with the error message, device and browser details.
QHow can I print a clear copy of my digital certificate?
Print from the original certificate file where possible, as a screenshot may reduce clarity. Use print preview to check the orientation and scaling, and make sure the full certificate fits on the page without cutting off its edges. Confirm that the learner details, course title, dates and certificate number remain readable, together with any QR code that appears. If the original file itself looks incomplete or unclear, request help through Contact support before printing further copies.
QCan I order a printed certificate after completing my course?
If you have already completed your course and want a posted copy, contact Contact support to ask whether an additional printed certificate is available for your existing award. Include your course title and certificate or order reference. Confirm the current charge, delivery address and expected delivery time before ordering. Explain that you need a copy of an existing certificate so the team can identify the correct record and advise whether a separate print order is available.
QWhat should I do if my printed certificate has not arrived?
First, check your order confirmation to confirm that you selected a posted paper certificate. Then review the delivery address and any dispatch information supplied, and compare the elapsed time with the delivery estimate given for your order. If the certificate is overdue or the address needs checking, contact Contact support with your order reference and course title. Explain whether you received a dispatch message and ask the team to check the delivery before arranging another paid copy.
QHow can I obtain a replacement for a lost or damaged certificate?
If you still have the original digital certificate, you may be able to download or print another copy using the instructions originally supplied. Otherwise, contact Contact support with your learner name, course title, approximate completion date and any certificate or order reference you retain. Ask what checks, charges and delivery options apply to a replacement. A replacement request concerns your existing achievement; if your training is due for renewal, ask about the appropriate course or assessment separately.
QHow do I correct a name, course title or date on my certificate?
Contact Contact support and explain exactly what appears on the certificate and what you believe it should show. Include your course title, certificate number if available, and order reference. Keep the original document unchanged while the issue is checked. Updating an account profile may not update a certificate that has already been issued. If supporting evidence is needed, follow the secure submission instructions provided by the team. Ask how any correction will affect the original document and its verification record.
QCan my certificate be updated if my name changes after it is issued?
If your name changes after your certificate is issued, contact Contact support to ask about the amendment process. Provide the name on the original certificate, the name you now use, your course title and certificate reference. Ask which evidence is required and how to provide it securely before sending identity documents. The request should relate to the same learner who completed the assessment. Also ask whether a revised certificate is available, whether a fee applies and how the original record will be handled.
QHow long is an NFS food hygiene or food safety certificate valid?
Check the expiry date on your certificate and the terms that applied when it was issued. NFS currently lists three years from the issue date for its Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety and Level 3 HACCP certificates. Your employer may require updated training sooner depending on your responsibilities. If you hold an older certificate, see different wording or cannot find an expiry date, contact Contact support to confirm which terms apply. Certificate validity and access to online course materials have separate terms.
QWhen should I refresh my food safety training or renew my certificate?
Review your training before the stated certificate expiry and whenever your responsibilities, workplace procedures or knowledge needs change. Ask your employer whether you need the same course again, a different level or training in a specific topic such as allergens or HACCP. Choose the course and assessment that meet that requirement, and keep a record of the update. Printing another copy of an existing certificate does not record new training. Browse current options at Browse courses.
QWill my employer or local authority accept my NFS certificate?
Acceptance depends on the requirements of the employer, contract or relevant authority. Ask for the exact course subject, level and awarding organisation required, then compare those requirements with your chosen NFS course before purchasing. A certificate can support your training records, but employers must also ensure staff have appropriate skills and up-to-date training for their duties. Keep evidence of workplace instruction alongside course records. Government guidance is available at https://www.gov.uk/running-food-business/staff-training-illness-hygiene.
QWhat is the difference between a CPD certificate and a regulated qualification?
CPD means Continuing Professional Development. A CPD certificate records professional development learning; a CPD description alone does not establish that the award is a regulated qualification. If your employer requires a regulated qualification, check its exact title, awarding organisation and qualification reference against the relevant official register. A course level or provider registration alone does not establish that status. Start at https://www.gov.uk/find-a-regulated-qualification, which provides access to the register for England and Northern Ireland and links to qualification information for Wales and Scotland.
QCan I use my NFS certificate for a job or food business outside the UK?
Check with the receiving employer, licensing body or relevant authority before relying on your NFS certificate outside the UK. Provide the exact course title, level, issuer, assessment information and course content so they can compare it with their requirements. Ask whether they require a particular local qualification, additional training or a translation. Obtain written confirmation where acceptance affects a job offer or business application. If they request course information you cannot find, contact Contact support with the details of their request.
QHow can an employer check an NFS certificate?
Use Verify a certificate to check an NFS certificate number. Compare the information returned with the document provided by the learner. For your training records, note when the check was completed and any points that still need clarification. Assess whether the course meets the employee’s role requirements, and contact Contact support if further confirmation is needed.
QWhere can I find my certificate number, and is it different from my order number?
Use the number labelled Certificate number or Serial number, including its punctuation. Your order reference cannot replace it. If the number is difficult to read, enlarge the original digital document or ask for a clearer copy before entering it. Avoid guessing unclear characters. If you cannot locate a number, contact Contact support with the course title and available purchase details so the team can advise.
QWhat should I do if the QR code on a certificate does not scan or open?
If your certificate includes a QR code, try scanning it from a clear, flat copy in good light, keeping the whole code visible. Increase the size of an on-screen certificate if the code appears too small. You can also open Verify a certificate directly and enter the printed certificate number. If scanning opens an unfamiliar website or keeps failing, use this direct NFS route.
QWhat does a successful certificate verification check confirm?
A matching result confirms that the number entered has a record in the verification service. It does not establish the identity of the person presenting the certificate. Use the result alongside your own checks that the learner, course and training date meet your requirements. If a detail you need is absent, ask Contact support for clarification before recording it as confirmed.
QHow can I share my certificate with an employer safely?
Use your employer’s agreed method to provide a copy of your original certificate, such as their training records system or a designated work email address. Include the official verification link, Verify a certificate, and the certificate number if they need to check it. Share only the information required for that purpose and keep your original file safely stored. Your employer should not need your NFS account password or email sign-in code to receive a certificate copy.
QWhat should I do if certificate verification cannot find a matching record?
Recheck the certificate number against the original document and confirm that National Food Safety is the issuer. An unsuccessful lookup alone does not establish fraud. If the issue continues, contact Contact support with the number, course title, approximate issue date and the message displayed. Keep the original certificate available for any follow-up checks. Ask for clarification before deciding that you need to repeat the course or purchase a replacement.
QWhat should I do if the certificate verification tool will not load or complete the check?
The online lookup needs JavaScript. Check that it is allowed for the NFS page, then try again with a current browser and stable connection. On a managed work device, ask your IT team if a browser setting is preventing the page from running. If the problem persists, contact Contact support with the page address, error message, browser and time of the attempt. Treat a technical failure as an incomplete check.
QWhat should I do if the verification details do not match the certificate?
Keep the original certificate unchanged and make a note of the specific differences you can see. Contact Contact support with the certificate number and a factual description of the discrepancy. Ask the team to clarify the record before relying on it for an employment or training decision. Do not edit the certificate to make it agree with the search result; any correction should follow the issuer’s process.
QCan I verify a certificate issued by another training provider through NFS?
The NFS verification page is intended for National Food Safety certificates. For another provider’s award, use that issuer’s official verification service or contact details. Check the organisation named on the certificate, which may include a training provider and a separate awarding organisation. Obtain contact details from the organisation’s own website. A certificate from another issuer cannot be judged invalid simply because it is absent from the NFS service.
QHow can I report a certificate that appears to have been altered or misused?
Visit https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/pages/report-a-certificate or email reportacertificate@nationalfoodsafety.org.uk. Include the certificate reference if available, where and when you saw it, and a factual explanation of your concern. You can attach relevant images in your email application; keep the original evidence unchanged and avoid including identity documents or unnecessary sensitive information. The page opens an email draft, so you must send the email yourself. If the email link does not open, copy the address into your usual email service.
Accreditation & Course Recognition
QAre National Food Safety courses accredited?
Check the accreditation stated for the specific NFS course you want to take. If a named accrediting body, course reference or verification link is not shown, contact us before buying to establish the current status. Provider registrations and a general website badge do not, by themselves, confirm accreditation of an individual course. Send the course link and any accreditation requirements from your employer to Contact support so your enquiry can be checked against the correct course.
QHow can I independently verify the accreditation of an NFS course?
Start with the accrediting organisation named for the course, then use that organisation’s official verification service or request confirmation directly. Compare the provider name, course or activity title, reference, scope and relevant dates. Use the accreditation reference supplied for that course, which may differ from your personal certificate number. For claims involving The CPD Group, its verification guidance is available at https://thecpd.group/verify-a-cpd-accreditation. If the information is missing or inconsistent, ask NFS for clarification before relying on the claim.
QWhat is the difference between an approved training provider and an accredited course?
Provider approval concerns the organisation delivering training, while course accreditation concerns the particular learning activity covered by the accreditor’s review. The distinction matters when choosing a course for an employer’s requirements. For example, The CPD Group explicitly explains that its provider approval does not automatically accredit the provider’s courses or activities. Ask for evidence covering the course you intend to take, together with the relevant accreditation reference. You can read The CPD Group’s explanation at https://thecpd.group/training-provider.
QWho issues my NFS course certificate?
Look for the issuer in the Exam and Certificate information for your chosen course. For example, the NFS Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety page identifies National Food Safety as the certificate issuer. An organisation that accredits learning may have a different role from the organisation issuing the learner’s certificate. If your employer requires an award from a particular awarding organisation, check that requirement before enrolling. Course information is available at Browse courses.
QWhat does CPD accreditation mean?
CPD means Continuing Professional Development: learning that helps maintain or develop professional knowledge and skills. CPD accreditation indicates that the relevant learning activity has been reviewed against the named accrediting organisation’s criteria. The exact scope should be checked with that organisation. CPD accreditation alone does not make a course an Ofqual-regulated qualification. A course may have more than one form of recognition, but each claim needs its own supporting evidence. Check which type your employer or professional body requires before choosing a course.
QCan I include NFS training in my professional CPD record?
NFS learning may contribute to your CPD record where it is relevant to your work and meets the rules of your employer or professional body. Check which activities they accept, what evidence they require and how they calculate hours or points. Keep the course title, learning date, topics covered, completion evidence and a short explanation of what you learned or changed in practice. If a particular accreditation or number of recognised hours is required, obtain confirmation before claiming that amount.
QAre CPD hours and points the same as academic or qualification credits?
CPD hours and points describe professional development activity; they should not automatically be treated as academic credits or credits towards a regulated qualification. Different organisations may have different recording rules, so check what the receiving body accepts and how it measures learning. Use the confirmed CPD information for the course and describe it accurately in your records. If you need credit towards a college, university or vocational programme, ask that institution whether it accepts the learning and obtain its decision before enrolling.
QAre NFS courses regulated by Ofqual?
If you need an Ofqual-regulated qualification, confirm the exact award before buying. A course title, CPD badge or provider registration does not establish regulated status. Ask for the qualification’s full title, awarding organisation and official qualification number, then check the corresponding register entry. If those details cannot be confirmed for your chosen NFS course, do not rely on it to meet a requirement for a regulated qualification. Start your check at https://www.gov.uk/find-a-regulated-qualification.
QDoes a Level 2, Level 3 or Level 4 course title confirm a regulated qualification?
A level label helps describe the intended depth of learning, but the number alone does not confirm that the course is a regulated qualification. Read the learning outcomes, intended audience, assessment requirements and issuer information to understand what the course covers. Two courses with similar titles or levels may have different content and recognition. Where a formal qualification level is required, check the exact award and its recorded level on the relevant official qualifications register.
QHow can I check whether a qualification appears on an official register?
Use https://www.gov.uk/find-a-regulated-qualification and search for the exact qualification title or number. Compare the awarding organisation and qualification details with the course you are considering; a similar title is not sufficient. The GOV.UK service provides access to the register covering England and Northern Ireland and links to the relevant qualification services for Wales and Scotland. If you are unsure which award your employer requires, ask for the full title and qualification number before purchasing.
QWhat does UKRLP registration mean?
The UK Register of Learning Providers identifies learning providers and assigns a UK Provider Reference Number, known as a UKPRN, following verification against a recognised source. Registration does not represent Department for Education quality assurance or accreditation of the provider’s courses. You can search by provider name or UKPRN at https://ukrlp.education.gov.uk/. Check that the record relates to the organisation you intend to use, and assess any course accreditation separately.
QDoes ICO registration mean a training provider or course is accredited?
An ICO register entry relates to the organisation’s data-protection fee registration. It does not confirm educational accreditation, course quality or regulated qualification status, and it is not a general guarantee that every aspect of data protection compliance has been checked. You can search the official register at https://ico.org.uk/ESDWebPages/Search using the organisation’s name or registration reference. Compare the organisation details and registration dates, and use the appropriate accreditor or qualifications register for educational recognition checks.
QIs National Food Safety a government organisation or food safety regulator?
National Food Safety is an independent training, learning and resource provider. It is not a government food safety regulator. An NFS course certificate records the relevant learning or assessment achievement; it does not replace food business registration, a licence or any other permission your business may need. For requirements affecting your premises or activities, speak to the relevant local authority or regulator. You can read about NFS at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/pages/about-us.
QDoes referring to FSA or HSE guidance mean a course is officially approved?
No. Referring to guidance from the Food Standards Agency or Health and Safety Executive identifies an information source; it does not, by itself, show that either organisation has approved the course. Any official approval claim needs evidence that names the approving organisation and explains the scope. If an employer asks for FSA-approved or HSE-approved training, ask them to identify the exact course, qualification or approval scheme they mean, then contact Contact support with that requirement before purchasing.
QDo food handlers legally need an accredited course or food hygiene certificate?
Food handlers must receive supervision, instruction and/or training appropriate to their work. There is no general requirement for every food handler to hold a particular food hygiene certificate, although an employer, contract or specific role may require one. Choose training that addresses the person’s actual duties and check any additional qualification requirements before paying. Keep evidence of relevant learning and workplace instruction. Government guidance is available at https://www.gov.uk/running-food-business/staff-training-illness-hygiene.
QWill my employer accept an NFS food safety certificate?
Ask your employer to confirm the subject, level, awarding organisation, assessment method and any renewal requirement they expect. Share the NFS course page so they can compare the content and certificate information with that requirement. If acceptance is important for a job offer, promotion or contract, obtain confirmation before purchasing. For help clarifying the course details, send the employer’s wording and the relevant course link to Contact support.
QWill an Environmental Health Officer accept my certificate during an inspection?
An Environmental Health Officer considers whether training is appropriate for the work being carried out and whether food safety procedures are understood and applied. Keep your course certificate alongside records of induction, relevant instruction, refresher learning and any practical checks. If an officer has identified a training gap, ask what knowledge, skill or evidence is needed so you can address that specific issue. Guidance on staff training records is available at https://www.gov.uk/running-food-business/staff-training-illness-hygiene.
QAre online food hygiene and food safety courses recognised?
Online learning can contribute to food hygiene training, but recognition depends on the course, the evidence it provides and the requirements of the organisation requesting it. Check the learning outcomes, assessment and any required accreditation or qualification. If your employer specifies classroom attendance, supervised assessment or a particular awarding organisation, obtain confirmation that the online option is acceptable before enrolling. Apply the learning through the instructions and procedures used in your own workplace.
QIs passing an online assessment enough to demonstrate workplace competence?
Passing an assessment provides evidence of the knowledge or skills that assessment actually checks. An online knowledge test does not, by itself, demonstrate that someone can carry out every workplace task safely. Employers should also check practical application and explain the relevant procedures, equipment and hazards. If you already have suitable learning or experience, check whether your chosen assessment option permits you to proceed without tracked lesson completion. Read the published assessment conditions and ask about anything unclear before purchasing.
QCan I include free NFS lessons in my training or CPD record?
Relevant free NFS lessons can form part of your self-study record. Keep the lesson title or link, date, time spent learning, topics covered and a short note explaining how the learning applies to your work. If you use the record for formal CPD, follow your employer’s or professional body’s rules about accepted activities and evidence. Watching free lessons does not automatically establish accredited CPD hours or an assessment pass. Explore the resources at Free Training Library.
QCan I use NFS training when working in a school, nursery or care setting?
Ask your employer or training lead to compare the NFS course with the responsibilities of your role and the setting’s training policy. Check the required food safety topics, allergen responsibilities, assessment evidence and any named qualification. General food hygiene learning may need to be supplemented with instructions specific to the people you support, the meals you prepare and the procedures you follow. Share the course information before buying, especially where your organisation has a mandatory training specification.
QWill completing an NFS course guarantee a five-star food hygiene rating?
A course certificate cannot guarantee a five-star rating. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme used in England, Wales and Northern Ireland assesses food handling, the condition of the premises and how food safety is managed. Training can help staff understand their responsibilities, but the business must apply effective procedures in practice. Use any inspection findings to identify improvements and training needs. Read how ratings are determined at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/food-hygiene-rating-scheme/food-hygiene-rating-scheme.
QWhat should I do if an employer requests a qualification from a specific awarding organisation?
Ask for the full qualification title, awarding organisation and qualification number, together with written confirmation of whether alternatives are permitted. A course with a similar name or level should not be assumed to be equivalent. Compare the requested award with the issuer and recognition information for your NFS course before buying. If you need help with the comparison, contact Contact support and include the exact requirement rather than a shortened description such as Level 2 certificate.
QWill an NFS HACCP certificate meet customer, supplier or audit requirements?
Ask the customer, supplier or auditor for the exact training requirement or relevant clause in their specification. Check the required HACCP topics, depth of learning, assessment method and any named qualification or approved provider. Share the proposed course details for confirmation before enrolling. A learner’s HACCP certificate records individual achievement; any certification or approval of the food business must be checked separately. You can review the NFS Level 3 HACCP course at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-3-haccp.
QCan I use NFS training in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Check both the course content and the requirements that apply where you work. Do not assume that a course level or accreditation automatically establishes acceptance throughout all four UK nations. If a regulated qualification is required, use the appropriate official register; https://www.gov.uk/find-a-regulated-qualification provides routes for England and Northern Ireland and links for Wales and Scotland. For advice about training suitable for your food business, ask the local authority responsible for your premises and share the course details.
QCan I use an NFS certificate outside the UK?
Obtain confirmation from the receiving employer, professional body, licensing authority or other relevant organisation before relying on an NFS certificate abroad. Provide the exact course title, issuer, learning outcomes and assessment information, and ask whether they require a particular local qualification or additional training. Obtain written acceptance where it affects a job or business application. If further course information is requested, contact Contact support and explain what the receiving organisation needs.
QDoes NFS certificate verification also confirm course accreditation?
The NFS verification service checks the certificate number and returns the information available for that record. It does not automatically establish external accreditation, government approval or acceptance for a particular job. Use Verify a certificate for the certificate record, then check any accreditation claim with the named accrediting organisation or relevant qualifications register. Comparing both records helps establish what was issued and which separate recognition, if any, applies to the course.
QWhat should I do if an employer or another organisation does not accept my certificate?
Ask for the reason in writing and the exact training or qualification requirement that has not been met. Check whether the issue concerns the subject, level, awarding organisation, assessment method, date or missing evidence. Contact Contact support with your course title, order or certificate reference and the organisation’s explanation. If you believe the course description led you to expect different recognition, include the wording you relied on and request a review before purchasing another course.
Pricing, Payments & Invoices
QHow much does an NFS food safety assessment and certificate cost?
You can find current food safety assessment and certificate prices on the relevant course pages at Browse courses. Select the course and certificate option you need, then check the updated price and basket before paying. The total may depend on your chosen option, printed copies, other products and any delivery charge. If the price shown does not match the option you intended to buy, check the selection and contact Contact support before completing payment.
QWhy is NFS learning free if assessment and certification are paid?
NFS provides free learning resources so you can study the topics and prepare before deciding whether you need assessment and certification. Payment relates to the assessment and certification option you select, together with any additional products or services included in that purchase. Completing free lessons does not automatically award a certificate. If you need evidence for work, check the assessment requirements and certificate details first. Explore the learning resources at Free Training Library.
QWhat is included in the advertised assessment and certificate price?
Read the contents of your selected package before purchasing. For example, the NFS Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety page lists an online assessment and a digital certificate after the completion requirements have been met. Check separately whether your selected option includes printed copies, delivery and any other extras. Paying for an assessment does not itself mean you have passed or earned the certificate. Review the course details at https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-hygiene-safety.
QDo NFS prices include VAT?
Where an NFS product page states that taxes are included, the displayed price includes the applicable taxes for that option. Check the final order breakdown before paying, especially if you change the selected products or delivery destination. If your accounts team needs a VAT breakdown or VAT invoice, ask NFS to confirm the tax treatment of your order. Contact Contact support with the course or product details, or your order reference if you have already purchased.
QDo printed certificates and postage cost extra?
A posted certificate is a separate option from a digital certificate where offered. Select the certificate format and number of printed copies you need, then review the updated price and any delivery charge before paying. Physical products added to the same order may also affect delivery costs. If you intended to buy only a digital option but see an unexpected delivery charge, check the basket contents and ask Contact support to clarify the total.
QDoes paying for additional certificate copies enrol additional learners?
Additional printed certificate copies apply to the same learner’s enrolment on the checked NFS course options. They should not be used as a way to purchase assessment places for other people. If you need training for several employees, establish the number of separate learner enrolments required and ask how those learners will be identified. Use the business purchasing enquiry at Finance options and specify both the number of learners and any printed copies needed.
QWill I have to pay again if I need to retake an assessment?
Check the retake conditions for your selected assessment before purchasing. The Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety page lists unlimited retakes, but the number of permitted attempts should be read alongside any stated charges and access conditions. If the cost is unclear, ask Contact support for confirmation. If your order expressly includes retakes and you are asked to pay again, provide your order reference, course title and the message shown so the existing purchase can be checked.
QIs my purchase a one-off payment or a subscription?
Check the purchase option and terms shown before you authorise payment. Confirm the amount due now and whether the option includes any future charges, billing frequency or minimum commitment. If a recurring option is offered, read how it can be managed or cancelled before selecting it. Keep the agreed terms with your order confirmation. If the payment arrangement is unclear, contact Contact support before paying rather than assuming that a course or certificate purchase has a particular billing schedule.
QCan I request a discount or quote for training several employees?
You can request a written business quote through Finance options. Include the courses required, number of learners, preferred certificate format, any workplace products and your purchasing deadline. Ask whether a group price or current promotion applies and what the quoted total includes. A business enquiry does not itself confirm a discount or reserve a price, so review the written quote and any validity period before placing your order.
QHow do I use a discount code, and why might it not work?
If you have a promotional code, enter it in the discount field provided at checkout and check that the reduction appears in the final total. If it is rejected, check the spelling, validity dates, eligible products, minimum spend and any restrictions stated in the offer. Another promotion may also affect whether the code can be used. If it still appears eligible, contact Contact support with the code and basket details before paying; do not assume a discount can be added afterwards.
QWhich payment methods can I use at NFS checkout?
Use the payment methods displayed for your order at checkout. The options available for a particular purchase may depend on the checkout and payment-provider requirements. A payment logo elsewhere on a website should not be treated as confirmation that the method is available for every order. If you need a particular payment arrangement for a business purchase, ask through Finance options before placing the order.
QCan I pay in instalments or use a buy-now-pay-later option?
Use an instalment or pay-later option only if it is actually offered for your purchase, and read its repayment dates, total cost, eligibility conditions and other terms before agreeing. The NFS Finance Options page is a business purchasing enquiry page and does not itself arrange credit or guarantee instalments. You can ask about current purchasing arrangements at Finance options. An enquiry is not approval of a payment plan.
QCan I pay from outside the UK, and which currency will I be charged in?
The checked NFS course pages display prices in pounds sterling, shown as GBP. Confirm the currency and final amount at checkout before authorising payment. If your card or account uses another currency, ask your payment provider about its conversion rate and any international transaction charges. Availability depends on the payment options and order details accepted at checkout. If you encounter a problem, contact Contact support with the error message and currency shown.
QWhy has my card payment been declined?
Read the checkout error, then check the card details, expiry date and billing address against the information held by your card issuer. Check that funds are available and complete any bank approval requested during checkout. If the payment is still declined without a clear explanation, contact your card issuer through its official app or the details on your card. Correct the problem before retrying, and check that the previous attempt did not complete before using another payment method.
QWhat should I do if my bank’s payment approval or security check fails?
Complete the approval through the bank’s own checkout prompt or banking application, then return to checkout and check the result. Approving a security request does not necessarily mean the payment has subsequently completed. If the prompt times out or fails, check your banking app for the request and contact the bank if needed. Before trying again, check for an existing order or payment. Keep banking passwords, PINs and authentication codes out of messages to NFS support.
QWhat should I do if checkout freezes or shows an error after I click Pay?
First establish whether the order or payment completed before submitting another payment. Check your email, including junk mail, for an order reference and review the payment status in your banking app. Keep a note of the checkout error and the approximate time it occurred. If the outcome remains unclear, contact Contact support with the checkout email address, course or product, amount, currency and payment time so the original attempt can be investigated.
QWhat should I do if my bank shows a pending payment but I have no order confirmation?
A pending bank entry can be an authorisation hold, where funds are temporarily reserved while the payment outcome is being processed. It is not conclusive evidence that NFS has received a completed payment or created a confirmed order. Check your inbox and junk folder, then contact Contact support with the checkout email, amount, currency and approximate payment time. Your bank can explain the status of its entry and any expected release time. Check the existing attempt before paying again.
QWhat should I do if I appear to have been charged twice?
Compare the dates, amounts and pending or completed status of both entries, and check whether you have received one order confirmation or two. A pending hold and a completed payment can appear separately, but two entries should not automatically be dismissed as harmless. Contact Contact support with the relevant order references and transaction details, and ask for both payments to be checked. If supporting evidence is requested, provide a masked copy showing only the relevant entries.
QWhy is my checkout or bank statement amount different from the advertised price?
Compare the advertised option, basket, final checkout total and order confirmation. A printed certificate, additional copies, another product, delivery charge or unapplied discount may explain a change. If the bank amount differs from the confirmed order total, also check the currency and any fees identified by your payment provider. For an unexplained difference, contact Contact support with your order reference and the amounts shown at each stage. Ask your bank about charges it has added separately.
QWhat should I do if I have paid but cannot access my assessment?
Check the course or assessment listed on your order and follow the access instructions supplied for that purchase. Use the correct learner or checkout email where sign-in is required; if an employer bought the assessment, confirm which learner details were provided. If a completed purchase still has no working access route, contact Contact support with your order reference, course title, email address and the message displayed. Ask for the existing purchase to be checked before buying another assessment.
QCan my employer or another person pay for my assessment?
If someone else is paying, make sure the cardholder or organisation has authorised the purchase and that the billing details are accurate. Confirm how the intended learner’s name and email should be supplied, as the payer and learner may be different people. For employer purchases, agree the learner details and invoice requirements before checkout. If the purchasing route is unclear, contact Contact support or use Finance options for a business enquiry.
QCan my business pay by bank transfer, purchase order or invoice?
For standard orders, use the payment methods offered at checkout. If your organisation requires bank transfer, a purchase order or payment against an invoice, ask NFS to confirm whether that arrangement is available before ordering. Submit the organisation name, items or courses, learner quantities and purchasing requirements through Finance options. Obtain written payment instructions and terms before proceeding. Requesting an invoice for a completed purchase does not, by itself, create an agreement to pay later.
QWhat is the difference between an order confirmation, a receipt and an invoice?
An order confirmation records the details of an order. A receipt acknowledges payment, while an invoice sets out the goods or services supplied, the amount charged and the relevant billing information; an invoice may also record that payment has already been received. These documents serve different purposes, so check what your employer or accounts team needs. An order confirmation should not automatically be treated as a VAT invoice. UK guidance is available at https://www.gov.uk/invoicing-and-taking-payment-from-customers.
QHow can I request a receipt or invoice for my NFS order?
Check the messages sent to your checkout email address for any receipt, invoice or document link already supplied. If you need another document, contact Contact support with your order reference, checkout email and the type of paperwork required. For a business purchase, include the correct company name and billing address. Explain whether you need proof of payment, an itemised invoice or paperwork for an expense claim so the request can be handled appropriately.
QCan I request a VAT invoice?
Whether a VAT invoice is available depends on the supplier’s VAT registration and the tax treatment of the order. Contact Contact support with your order reference and explain that your accounts team requires VAT documentation. Ask for confirmation of any VAT charged and the applicable invoice details. A VAT invoice must contain the required VAT information; an ordinary receipt should not simply be relabelled. Guidance is available at https://www.gov.uk/invoicing-and-taking-payment-from-customers/invoices-what-they-must-include.
QCan my invoice include my company details, and how can I correct an error?
Provide the correct purchaser or company name and billing address before ordering wherever those details are requested. Keep the learner’s certificate details separate from the billing information. If an issued invoice contains an error, contact Contact support with the order and invoice references, the existing wording and the correction requested. Ask the team to confirm the appropriate correction process. Keep the original document unchanged so the purchase and any amendment remain traceable.
QWhat should I do if my receipt or invoice is missing or will not open?
Check the checkout email address, junk folder and any document links in your order messages. If a supplied file will not open, confirm that the download completed and use an application suitable for its format. If the link is unavailable, the file remains unreadable or no document was supplied, request help through Contact support. Include your order reference, the document required and the error message. Ask for a usable copy rather than making another purchase.
QCan I request a written quote or pro forma invoice before ordering?
Use Finance options to request a written business quote and explain whether your purchasing process requires a pro forma invoice. Include the course or product names, learner or item quantities, certificate options, billing organisation and any delivery requirements. Review the price, validity period, payment instructions and what happens after approval before ordering. A quote or pro forma document is not proof that payment has been received or that learner access has been activated.
Business Training & Group Bookings
QCan I arrange food safety training for my business or team?
Yes. National Food Safety accepts enquiries about training for teams, including the courses, learner numbers and support your organisation needs. Start with your employees' duties and the food safety topics they need to understand, then request a suitable booking arrangement. Tell us whether you need a specific set of assessments or ongoing support for staff learning and records. Explore business training and membership support at Business membership
QHow do I request a quote for a group booking?
Visit Contact support and choose Business & team training. Include your organisation name, contact email, number of learners, course titles or topics, number of sites, preferred start date and completion deadline. Mention any manager reporting, accessibility or purchasing requirements. For example: 12 food handlers needing Level 2 Food Hygiene and 2 supervisors needing Level 3, across 2 sites. Ask for a written quote showing the proposed arrangement before ordering.
QDo you offer group booking discounts or have a minimum group size?
Ask for pricing based on your actual learner numbers and course mix. Any minimum booking quantity, volume discount or eligibility condition needs to be confirmed for that offer; a group enquiry does not automatically apply a discount. If you expect to recruit more staff later, explain this at the quotation stage and ask how additional places would be priced. Compare the total cost and inclusions, rather than assuming the lowest advertised starting price covers your whole team.
QWhat should my business training quote include?
Ask for the course titles and levels, number of individual learner places, assessment entitlements, digital or printed certificates, and any membership or management tools included. The quote should also identify the total price, applicable tax treatment, delivery charges, payment arrangements, access dates and any recurring charges. Confirm retake conditions, unused-place rules and cancellation terms before accepting. Keep the agreed quote and terms with your purchase records so the person arranging access knows exactly what was bought.
QWhich food safety courses should I choose for different staff roles?
Match training to the work each employee performs and their level of responsibility. Review Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety for food-handling roles and Level 3 Food Hygiene & Safety for supervisory responsibilities. Consider relevant allergen, HACCP, COSHH and workplace health and safety learning where the role requires it. Check the course content against your own procedures and any customer, employer or awarding-body requirement before purchasing. Compare course subjects and levels at Browse courses
QCan a group booking include different courses and levels?
Include the different courses and learner numbers in your business enquiry so the proposed arrangement can be confirmed. For example, you might need food hygiene assessments for kitchen staff and additional allergen-management or HACCP learning for selected supervisors. Ask for separate quantities against each course title and level. This helps prevent the whole team being assigned one course when employees have different responsibilities. Confirm the agreed course allocation before learners begin.
QCan I arrange training for several branches, sites or franchise businesses?
Explain how many sites are involved, which organisation is purchasing and who needs oversight at each location. NFS's business membership comparison describes options for multiple teams or sites; confirm the actual learner, site and manager limits in your chosen arrangement. For franchises or separately owned businesses, clarify which organisations and users are covered. Ask whether each manager can see only their own team and who can view organisation-wide records: https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/pages/business-membership-comparison
QDo I need Business Membership to buy training for employees?
Standalone courses and memberships are separate purchasing options. If you need a defined number of employee assessments, ask for those places to be quoted explicitly. Membership may be useful where you also need ongoing resources or team-management support, but check whether the selected assessments and certificates are included or charged separately. Confirm any recurring billing and renewal terms before joining. Compare the purpose of each option at Membership options
QCan my employees use the free learning resources before we buy assessments?
Yes. Employees can access NFS's free written lessons and any available videos at Free Training Library before you purchase assessments. Use relevant lessons to introduce a topic, discuss how it applies at work and identify areas needing more explanation. Assessment and certification are separate from free learning. If you hold a group learning session, record attendance and topics covered; watching or reading together does not mean every employee has passed an individual assessment.
QCan employees study at different times around their shifts?
Plan individual study slots around your rota, with enough uninterrupted time for the chosen assessment. Check the course's study requirements, assessment time limit and access conditions before setting deadlines. Give each employee time to learn, ask questions and review unfamiliar topics, and allow for further study if needed. Free learning resources can support preparation, but confirm whether an assessment can be paused or resumed before relying on that option.
QDo you offer classroom, on-site or bespoke business training?
The course catalogue describes online training. If you need classroom delivery, an instructor at your premises, a live online session or content tailored to your procedures, contact us with the subject, location, group size and preferred dates before booking: Contact support. Ask whether the requested format is available, who would deliver it and what costs apply. A group purchase alone does not confirm a trainer, venue or site visit.
QCan our business pay while each employee receives their own certificate?
Use the business's correct billing details and make sure each assessment is assigned to the intended employee. Each successful learner's certificate should identify that learner, even when an employer pays the bill. Keep the purchaser's details separate from the names required for assessment and certification. If the ordering route does not clearly explain how to identify several learners, confirm the allocation process before paying; do not enter the business owner's name for every employee.
QHow do I give each employee access to the correct course or assessment?
Follow the enrolment instructions supplied for your booking and confirm how individual learner access is created. Have each employee's correctly spelled name, required course and intended access email ready, then check which details NFS actually needs. If someone has no individual email address, ask for a supported arrangement before setting them up. Do not assume increasing a basket quantity automatically creates separate learner accounts. For help, use Contact support
QDo extra printed certificate copies count as additional learner places?
No. Additional printed certificate copies are copies for the same learner; they do not create extra learner places. For example, one employee may want a copy for themselves and another for the employer's records. Training two employees requires separate learner entitlements, each linked to the correct person and assessment. Check the number of learner places independently from the number of printed copies: https://nationalfoodsafety.org.uk/products/level-2-food-hygiene-safety
QCan employees share a computer or use the same login?
A workplace computer can be used by different learners if it meets the chosen course's requirements, but each person should use their own authorised access. Sign out fully between users and check the learner's name before starting an assessment. Avoid sharing passwords, verification codes or one employee's account across the team. If employees have no individual email addresses or suitable devices, ask NFS to confirm an appropriate setup before booking.
QCan managers track employee progress and download training reports?
NFS advertises team progress tools and organisation reporting within its membership options. Confirm what your particular arrangement includes: manager access, the information shown, update frequency and any downloadable reports. If you need an Excel or CSV export, ask about that specifically before ordering. A progress view should be interpreted according to what it actually measures; a resource visit is different from an assessment pass. Keep a separate staff-training record for workplace instruction.
QHow can I collect and verify my team's certificates?
Ask each employee for their issued certificate, or use the certificate overview if it is included in your arrangement. Check that the learner and course match your records. Verify the full printed certificate serial number, including letters and punctuation, at Verify a certificate and compare the information returned with the document. Use the certificate number rather than the order reference. An unclear or mismatched result needs clarification; a matching record does not establish the holder's identity.
QHow long do we have to allocate learner places and finish training?
Confirm three things before ordering: when unused places must be allocated, when each learner's access starts, and when that access ends. Ask whether the deadline runs from purchase, allocation or activation, and whether an extension is available if needed. A certificate's expiry date is different from the deadline for completing an assessment. For existing bookings, contact support with your order reference and intended completion date before assuming that unused places remain available indefinitely.
QCan I add employees after the initial booking?
NFS's business membership page directs customers to support when learner or site requirements change. Provide your existing booking or membership reference, the additional learner numbers and required courses, then ask for the current cost and setup instructions. Confirm whether the change affects any recurring membership charge or agreed limits. Wait for confirmation of the new entitlement before assuming another employee is covered by the original order.
QCan I transfer an unused learner place if an employee leaves?
Contact support before changing the learner's details. Provide the booking reference and explain whether the place is unallocated, assigned, activated or already used for an assessment. Ask whether reassignment is permitted and whether a fee or deadline applies. An unused assessment place, an employee's account and an issued certificate are different things. Do not overwrite a former employee's name or assessment history to give their completed certificate to someone else.
QCan I change or cancel a group booking?
Contact us promptly at Contact support with your order reference, affected course, number of places and requested change. Explain whether learner access has been allocated or activated and whether any assessment has started. Ask which cancellation or amendment terms apply to that booking and whether any refund or credit is available. If membership is involved, confirm the effective cancellation date and any remaining charges. Keep the written outcome; submitting a request does not itself confirm cancellation.
QWhat should I do if an employee has not received access or has the wrong course?
Check the intended learner email, including junk folders, for any supplied access instructions. Check the booking records to confirm the correct person and course were allocated, and make sure the employee is using their own access route. If the issue remains, contact Contact support with the order reference, affected learner, course title and exact error. Include the site if relevant. Avoid buying a replacement place while the existing entitlement is being checked.
QWhat happens if an employee fails an assessment?
Follow that assessment's retake rules and help the employee revisit the topics they found difficult. Check any retake fee, waiting period and access deadline before planning another attempt; an unlimited-retakes label alone does not explain all of those conditions. Managers can support preparation and explain workplace procedures, but assessment assistance must follow the assessment rules and the employee must complete their own attempt. Contact support if the retake is unavailable or the recorded result appears incorrect.
QCan you support employees who need accessibility or language assistance?
Contact us before purchasing or starting a timed assessment and explain the practical support the employee needs. Ask about the language of the learning and assessment, available formats and any permitted adjustments, such as extra time, captions or keyboard access. These arrangements need confirmation for the specific course; do not assume every option is available. Agree how any assistance will work before the assessment begins: Contact support
QCan our business pay by invoice, purchase order or bank transfer?
You can enquire about business purchasing and the invoicing process at Finance options. Give your organisation name, billing details, required learner places and any purchase-order reference or supplier-onboarding requirement. Ask which payment arrangements are available and obtain written confirmation before relying on bank transfer, payment after delivery or a credit period. Issuing a purchase order or requesting an invoice does not by itself confirm that a booking has been accepted or access activated.
QHow should we organise urgent training for new starters or an inspection?
Tell NFS the actual deadline and confirm the time needed for booking setup, study, assessment attempts and any certificate processing. Review employees' existing training first so you can target gaps instead of automatically repeating every course. New starters still need suitable instruction and supervision for their actual duties before handling food. Provide workplace induction and check understanding; an order confirmation alone is not evidence of completed training. Allow time to resolve access problems and unsuccessful attempts.
QWhat staff training records should our business keep?
Keep a record for each employee showing their role and site, relevant courses or learning, completion dates, assessment outcomes where applicable, certificate references, workplace instruction and planned review dates. Record practical training on your own safe methods as well as online certificates. Review learning needs when duties, equipment, menus or procedures change, or when a knowledge gap is identified. The Food Standards Agency provides a staff-training record you can adapt to your workplace: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/69c53da423fcbcd838a6f780/fsa-sfbb-diary-training-record_0.pdf
QWill training all our staff with NFS make our business legally compliant?
No. Staff training contributes to safe food handling, but the business must also put suitable procedures into practice, supervise staff and check that people can perform their duties safely. GOV.UK explains that food handlers do not have to hold a food hygiene certificate, while staff still need appropriate skills and current training. Keep evidence of learning and workplace instruction, and check any specific course or qualification requirement before booking.
