Quick answer
Revise COSHH by practising how to recognise exposure, choose the correct information and explain workplace controls and escalation. Use original scenarios and reasoned answers alongside your actual syllabus. These practice prompts are not official exam questions, leaked material or a claim that a mock-test download already exists.
Match practice to the real learning objectives
Confirm the provider’s actual syllabus, assessment format and current rules. Identify the role depth: following instructions, supervising work and making a competent assessment are different responsibilities.
HSE training guidance identifies practical knowledge about substance risks, controls, relevant information and emergency arrangements. Understanding those decisions is more useful than memorising slogans alone.
Practise with original scenarios
| Question | Reasoned direction |
|---|---|
| A supplier sheet is filed. Is the task assessed? | No: the workplace task, exposure and controls still need suitable assessment. |
| The same cleaner is now sprayed instead of wiped. What changes? | Review the exposure route/method and precautions before relying on the old assessment. |
| The extraction fan is running. Is control proved? | No: relevant performance, setup and actual capture need evidence. |
| A worker’s certificate is current but equipment changes. Is instruction finished? | No: current task-specific instruction and competence need review. |
These are explanation prompts, not a pass-mark scheme. The precise answer for a real task depends on its evidence and applicable requirements.
Practise finding and explaining information
Use an authorised current product label, relevant safety data sheet and workplace procedure. Explain which information describes hazards and which document assesses the actual work. Identify where uncertainty should be escalated.
HSENI COSHH guidance explains the SDS/assessment distinction and separate NI duties. Keep jurisdiction names accurate rather than treating the GB 2002 instrument as NI law.
Test an exception, not only normal work
Illustrative exercise: the usual dosing unit fails and a worker is asked to guess the concentration manually. Explain why the approved fault/alternative-work route is needed and what competent information would be required. Do not invent a dilution to complete the answer.
Similarly, explain why unknown products should not be identified by smelling, mixing or tasting. A useful answer recognises boundaries and obtains competent help.
Review your reasoning and practical gaps
After each scenario, check whether you identified the task, exposure, controls, evidence and escalation. Revisit unclear concepts with reliable materials or the provider, and practise explaining them in your own words.
Use the existing COSHH worked guide for context. Assessment success does not itself authorise specialist tasks or replace workplace instruction and supervision.
Next steps
- Confirm the actual syllabus and role depth.
- Use original task scenarios and explain the rationale.
- Practise locating current information and escalation routes.
- Review gaps without claiming access to real exam material.
