What COSHH training do staff need, and how should employers choose it?

Quick answer

Choose COSHH training by the person’s work, exposure and decision responsibility, then add workplace-specific instruction and competence checks. General awareness can explain hazards and precautions but does not replace a task assessment or specialist expertise. Verify the provider’s actual syllabus, assessment, accessibility and certification terms rather than choosing only by a level label.

Define learning needs before selecting a course

HSE’s training guidance covers substance risks, controls, relevant exposure information, emergency action and access to safety data sheets. Staff need to understand the actual precautions and changes affecting their work.

Map handlers, supervisors, purchasers, maintenance staff and assessors separately. Someone following an approved procedure needs different depth from a person designing exposure controls or interpreting specialist measurements.

Compare training options against the task

Course-choice checklist
Question Why it matters
Audience and scope Does it address the actual work and responsibility?
Learning outcomes Does it explain relevant hazards, controls and escalation?
Assessment What knowledge or practical ability is actually checked?
Access/support Can the learner use the format, language and arrangements?
Outcome and terms What certificate is issued and what does it represent?
Site instruction Who will demonstrate the actual controls and verify competence?

Check employer or contract recognition directly. A provider logo or CPD description is not proof of a regulated qualification or approval for every workplace.

Keep awareness and assessor competence distinct

HSE’s COSHH FAQs explains that assessment requires suitable knowledge, skills and experience, not one particular qualification. A short course is not automatic authority to assess a specialist process outside the person’s competence.

HSENI guidance supplies the separate NI framework. Training must support that task and applicable duties, not merely repeat a GB law title without context.

Check the verified NFS awareness option

NFS’s Level 2 COSHH course is intended for employees handling cleaning chemicals or encountering harmful substances and introduces assessment, controls, handling, protective equipment and emergency awareness. Check current access, assessment/certification and support details on the live page.

NFS offers free learning videos with paid certification options; confirm the selected offer’s actual inclusions. The course does not replace the employer’s workplace assessment, equipment instructions or a competent specialist where needed.

Verify practical use after learning

Illustrative check: ask the learner to identify the correct product, find the current procedure and explain what to do if the dosing unit fails. Assess actual practice under suitable supervision and record remaining gaps.

Refresh when risks, work or evidence of understanding change. Keep a clear handover to the person responsible for workplace instruction rather than assuming the course-completion email finishes the process.

Next steps

  1. Map role, exposure and decision depth.
  2. Compare actual learning, assessment, access and outcome.
  3. Add current task-specific instruction and practical checks.
  4. Record competence and identify specialist limits.
