Where can you find useful free food hygiene, HACCP, allergen and COSHH learning resources?

Quick answer

Choose a resource by the task you need help with and the evidence you need to produce. Official learning, a food-safety management tool, written guidance and an assessed provider course serve different purposes. Read each resource's scope and conditions rather than assuming every free item includes a Level 2 certificate or formal qualification.

Start with the task and outcome

Write down the practical question first: understanding customer allergen requests, building a documented food-safety system, checking cleaning-chemical controls or preparing for food-handling work. Then ask whether you need explanation, a working tool, assessed learning or evidence requested by an employer.

A useful free resource can support learning without replacing local instruction, a competent assessment of your process or the outcome a role specifically requires. Avoid choosing by a familiar level number alone.

Compare official resources

Official free resources and their different purposes
Resource Useful starting purpose Boundary to check
FSA allergy training Structured educational learning about food allergy and related information. Read its own completion/certificate terms; do not rename it as another award or FSA accreditation.
MyHACCP Help developing documented HACCP-based controls for a business. A plan-building tool is not proof that the real process is adequately controlled or a certificated training course.
FSS CookSafe training section Training guidance within a Scottish catering food-safety management resource. Read the full relevant pack and use it for the operation it is designed to support.
HSE COSHH training guidance Understanding information, instruction and training for hazardous-substance work. HSE guidance concerns Great Britain; a webpage does not establish task competence or replace risk-specific instruction.

Read the current source rather than an old search snippet. Check its intended audience and geographical scope before applying it to a business.

Where the NFS programme fits

The current NFS programme offers eligible learners digital learning, assessment and digital certificates at £0 for nine listed courses. It includes particular food hygiene, allergen, HACCP and health-and-safety courses. It does not currently include every subject or level in the wider catalogue; COSHH, Health & Safety Level 3 and Food Safety Management Level 4 are not on this programme's current nine-course list.

Personal eligibility, current service and account conditions and registration still apply. The required learning and a successful assessment are necessary to earn the digital certificate. Optional physical certificate extras remain payable.

Use this route if its published conditions fit you and its subjects fit your learning goal. For another resource, compare that resource's own conditions independently.

Distinguish funding and access models

A provider's conditional offer, an official learning resource and a government-funded qualification are separate arrangements. Free Courses for Jobs, for example, is an England-specific government offer with its own applicant and qualification conditions. Its rules do not define the NFS programme.

Local authority or college learning can have different local availability and outcomes. Confirm the actual provider, location, funding conditions and course before relying on an advert. The National Careers Service's free-training guidance can help with the broader search.

Build a small useful learning path

Illustrative example: a small catering business wants to improve customer allergen answers. The manager starts with official allergen learning, compares it with the real menu and supplier information, then arranges practice using the business's own customer-answer procedure. If an assessed course is also wanted, its outcome is checked separately. No webpage or certificate makes an unsupported allergen assurance safe.

For a HACCP task, start with the relevant management-system guidance and your actual food flow rather than collecting certificates without applying the controls. For cleaning chemicals, start with the real substances, risk assessment and work instructions.

Questions to ask of any free resource

  • Who publishes it, and is it current enough for the issue?
  • Does it fit the nation, sector, food process or workplace task?
  • Is it guidance, a tool, educational completion or an assessed course?
  • What learning, assessment and certificate costs or conditions are stated?
  • What practical instruction or specialist input is still required?
  • Will the employer or organisation accept the exact outcome you need?

Next steps

  1. Pick one concrete task and the outcome you need.
  2. Open the relevant official resource and check its scope.
  3. Apply the learning to actual procedures and arrange suitable instruction.
  4. Compare assessed course outcomes separately; explore NFS eligibility if the current offer fits.
