Quick answer
Check the actual course's device requirements, access arrangements, learning formats and assessment support before starting. Explain the practical help you need and ask which arrangements are available. The NFS checker can guide a personal programme enquiry; it does not establish that every device, language or support feature is available.
Make access part of your course choice
A suitable topic is only one part of a useful course. You also need to read or hear the material, operate the learning interface and understand how the assessment is delivered. A smartphone, shared computer or assistive technology can create different questions.
The National Careers Service course-support guidance provides general signposting on learning support. For a specific NFS course, ask NFS support about the actual arrangements. This guide lists questions to resolve; it does not advertise unverified NFS features.
Check the practical setup
| Area | Check or ask |
|---|---|
| Device and browser | Which devices, browsers and screen sizes are supported for learning and assessment? |
| Connection | What connection is needed, and what happens if it drops during an assessment? |
| Audio and video | Which parts use sound or video, and are the formats you need available? |
| Reading and downloads | Can you use the text and any required downloaded files with your normal tools? |
| Progress and access | Is progress saved, how long is access available and what happens after an interruption? |
| Assessment | What are the format, completion conditions and permitted support arrangements? |
These questions are especially useful before relying on a work, interview or personal deadline. An estimated course duration does not confirm continuous access or a guaranteed completion time.
A phone may be convenient for preparing questions, while a larger screen may make longer reading or controls easier to use. These are practical choices, not a promise that a particular NFS course supports either device. Confirm the actual course requirements.
Ask for support in practical terms
Describe the task you need help with: reading long passages, understanding audio, using a keyboard, operating a screen reader or completing an assessment in a usable format. Ask what information the provider needs and how any personal information should be supplied.
Do not assume that captions, transcripts, translation, extra time, offline learning or a particular adjustment are already available. Ask about the selected course and wait for a clear answer.
Illustrative example: a learner finds spoken material difficult to use. They ask whether the relevant course has a complete text alternative and how assessment instructions are presented. If their usual device cannot use the available format, they resolve that issue before planning a start.
Selecting an optional support preference in the checker does not itself send a support request. Use the published contact route to discuss the practical help you need, and do not provide medical details in the checker.
Before using the personal checker
Read the current NFS programme and identify your own current route. Benefit payments and former UK Armed Forces status concern the learner, not a helper's circumstances. Someone helping you navigate does not become the applicant.
The published checker uses self-certification and does not ask for proof uploads. Keep your account sign-in and declaration under your control. If a friend, adviser or carer assists with navigation, ask what assistance is permitted for the learning and assessment; the learning outcome must remain truthful.
The current eligible digital offer covers learning, assessment and digital certificates, with required completion and a pass. Physical certificate extras remain payable. Matching a route is separate from current service, account and registration checks.
If the checker does not work as expected
- Record the page address and the exact visible message, if there is one.
- Describe the step you were trying to complete and the device or browser you were using.
- Say whether the problem concerns navigation, an unclear route, account access or a service message.
- Use the page's contact-support route if the issue remains unresolved.
- Wait for clarification rather than changing truthful answers to obtain a different result.
An unavailable service or unfinished account step is not a decision that you meet, or fail, the programme conditions. Do not rely on access until it is confirmed.
Keep the enquiry focused
A useful first message identifies the practical question and minimum necessary context. Do not send passwords, bank information, National Insurance details, medical histories or full benefit documents through an ordinary enquiry. Avoid screenshots containing another person's details or private account information.
If support needs more information, ask why it is needed and use a verified appropriate route. You can ask about a feature or an eligibility option without describing every aspect of your personal circumstances.
Next steps
- Run through the device and support questions for the selected course.
- Resolve any access or assessment uncertainty with the provider.
- Use your own truthful programme route and keep account details private.
- If something fails, report the visible issue clearly and wait for an answer.
