Quick answer
Former UK Armed Forces status is a separate route in the NFS free-training programme. You do not have to present receipt of a benefit as a prerequisite to using that published former-service route. Answer about your own circumstances and use the checker for the current course choices and registration conditions.
Understand the former-service route
The NFS programme lists veterans or former UK Armed Forces personnel independently from its benefit routes. This matters for a former service member who is working or is not receiving one of the listed benefits.
Use the programme's own wording rather than importing a definition from a different resettlement or funding scheme. This guide does not add a service-length threshold, injury condition, discharge category or family route that NFS has not published. Ask NFS if your circumstances do not clearly fit the option.
Match previous experience to the next role
Start with the civilian tasks you want to perform. Previous service experience may be relevant, but it should be described accurately and compared with the employer's current requirements. Ask which learning, assessment outcome and workplace instruction it expects.
| Possible goal | Useful preparation question |
|---|---|
| Food preparation or service | Which food-handling tasks will I carry out, and which current procedures must I learn? |
| Supervising a team | Will I allocate checks, handle problems or maintain food-safety records? |
| Supporting a HACCP system | Will I follow an established system or help develop and review controls? |
Illustrative example: a former service member applying for a kitchen role lists the actual preparation and service duties in the advert. They compare a relevant food-hygiene course with any required outcome, then ask how the employer demonstrates its own equipment, allergen and record-keeping procedures. A course and truthful prior experience support the conversation; neither guarantees a job.
Distinguish this offer from resettlement support
The official Career Transition Partnership guidance describes a separate resettlement service with its own arrangements. Use that official source for questions about that service.
An NFS eligibility result is not a government funding or resettlement decision. Do not infer MOD approval, ELCAS eligibility or reimbursement merely because a provider offers a former-service route. Check the relevant scheme directly if you are also considering a different funded option.
Check the personal digital inclusions
The current nine-course NFS programme includes digital learning, assessment and digital certificates at £0 for eligible learners. Optional printed, posted and laminated certificates remain payable. Completing all required learning and passing the assessment are still necessary to earn a digital certificate.
Course choice and a matching declaration do not create learning access. Current service, account and registration checks still apply. Choose several subjects only for your own learning; a quantity or selection is not a group enrolment.
Family members and AFIP: keep the routes separate
Does a family member's service make you eligible?
The published former-service route concerns the applicant's own former UK Armed Forces status. A partner, child or other relative should not assume that another person's service gives them that route. They may have a separate listed route of their own, or can ask NFS to clarify the circumstances.
What if you receive AFIP?
Armed Forces Independence Payment is listed independently in the programme. The official AFIP guidance explains the benefit itself. Using a listed AFIP route does not require declaring former-service status first.
Next steps
- Identify whether your own former-service circumstances fit the published route.
- Compare the learning with the civilian role and any required outcome.
- Separate NFS conditions from any other resettlement or funding arrangement.
- Use the checker and follow the current personal registration steps.
